Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Poultry housing is a situation in point. It's also a classic instance of the great old bandwagon being jumped on as numerous potential fowl housing experts pitch a selection of cottage declaring to be the excellent solution to your chicken housing needs. Commonly the cost looks attractive, the house looks attractive, heck even the clean-cut household standing there feeding the chickens look eye-catching. Certainly they know a quality chicken house when they see one? There are many affordable and horrible cages swamping the marketplace. I understand this as I've tested a number of them in the field, and seen a ewe run directly via one when the feed container showed up. The result was only an expensive pile of fire wood and also a small flock of bemused and currently homeless bantams. Chickens for sale in Rewey WI

Usually these mass produced models are constructed of rapid grown hardwood - come the initial decrease of rainfall they swell, leaving you either fortifying a door that won't close, or tearing the door furniture off in a vain attempt to release the squawking citizens. The initial warm day means the hardwood dries and cracks, the really felt roof covering bubbles and boils, as well as come nightfall the chickens choose not to go in. This is not due to their disappointment at the decline of their when eye-catching residential property yet because the hovel is now a haven for, and also probably abounding, the chicken keeper's bane, red mite. Add on the fact that it claimed on the blurb that it would match four huge hens when that equipping thickness was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and just what are you entrusted? A couple of hinges as well as some kindling. A suitable coop for thee to 4 birds should cost you in the region of ₤ 300 though this could depend on whether you choose for a cost-free standing house or one with a run attached. Thinking you are ranging your birds in a big space and also the pop hole doorway allows enough for the breed you maintain, then the main demands of housing boil down to three points which will specify the number of birds your home will hold; perches, nest boxes and also air flow. A lot of breeds of chicken will perch when they visit roost in the evening, this perch ought to ideally be 5-8cm large with smoothed off edges so the foot sits comfortably on it. The perch needs to be more than the nest box access as chickens will certainly also normally look for the highest point to perch. A perch below that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is incidentally when they create the most poo) leading to stained eggs the list below day. They should not however be so high off the floor of your home that leg injuries could happen when the bird comes down in the early morning. Chickens need regarding 20cm of perch each (in tiny types this is certainly less), plus if more than one perch is set up in the house they must be more than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their next-door neighbors but are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Ideally your house ought to have a the very least one nest box for every three birds as well as these need to be off the ground and in the darkest location of your house. The house needs to have ample air flow: without it after that condensation will certainly develop every night, even in the coldest of climate. Know, air flow deals with the principle of cozy air leaving with a high gap attracting cooler air in from a lower gap - it's not a set of openings on other walls of your home and at the very same degree, this is exactly what's known as a draught. If you have a house with a run connected then the points above are still real, but you ought to additionally think about the run dimension. The EU optimum legal equipping thickness for a complimentary variety bird is (as well as allow's encounter it, one of the inspirations for maintaining some hens in the house is potentially improved or far better welfare) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's maximum one bird each 4m squared. Take a close check out several of the deal houses - it could well be your house has the appropriate perches, right ventilation as well as adequate nest boxes for a sensible variety of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized item of ground to spend the day on? Therefore as the saying goes, "you get what you pay for". You may think you've got hold of a deal, however you and your flock can rue the day you did. Purchase the right house and also it will certainly last for a few years, if not longer given the correct treatment. Eventually your fowl as well as your fowl maintaining encounter will certainly be a lot the much better for it.
