Building a Chicken Coop

Well, we are finally done building our chicken coop for the most part. Britton woke up early on Saturday and put the shingles on the top and built the nesting boxes. He had the already done, but with the crazy rainy/snowy weather we had put off moving it to the backyard until today.

We used the lawnmower as a dolly to transport it from the garage to our backyard because I am a wuss and couldn’t carry it. Then we needed to paint the plywood white to help protect it from the elements including the sprinkler system. So we went for a bike ride down to Ace and picked up a little can of exterior paint. We sat down to paint and were done in about 15 minutes. When I saw the white blank canvas, I decided to make it a cuter chicken coop with a custom paint job. Voila! Not bad for a day’s work. What do you think? We can’t wait till the baby chicks are old enough to live there with the Leghorn.

Generally these standardized designs are built of quick grown up lumber - come the very first drop of rain they swell, leaving you either barricading a doorway that will not shut, or ripping the doorway furniture off in a vain effort to launch the squawking occupants. The first cozy day implies the lumber dries and also fractures, the felt roof bubbles and also boils, and also come nightfall the hens choose not to go in. This is not due to their dissatisfaction at the decrease of their when eye-catching property however because the hovel is now a sanctuary for, and probably abounding, the fowl keeper's bane, red mite. Add on that it said on the blurb that it would certainly match four huge chickens when that stocking density was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, as well as exactly what are you left with? A few joints and also some kindling. A good coop for thee to 4 birds must cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this can depend on whether you elect for a complimentary standing house or one with a run affixed. Thinking you are ranging your birds in a huge space and the pop opening door allows enough for the type you keep, then the major requirements of real estate come down to three points which will certainly specify the variety of birds the house will hold; perches, nest boxes as well as air flow. A lot of breeds of chicken will perch when they go to roost at night, this perch needs to preferably be 5-8cm wide with smoothed off sides so the foot rests pleasantly on it. The perch needs to be more than the nest box entrance as chickens will certainly also naturally seek the highest point to perch. A perch below that will have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is by the way when they produce one of the most poo) resulting in stained eggs the following day. They shouldn't nonetheless be so high off the flooring of your home that leg injuries might happen when the bird gets down in the early morning. Chickens require regarding 20cm of perch each (in tiny types this is clearly much less), plus if greater than one perch is mounted in your house they must be greater than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their next-door neighbors but are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Preferably your home must have a least one nest box for each 3 birds and these need to be off the ground and also in the darkest area of the house. Your home must have ample ventilation: without it after that condensation will accumulate every evening, also in the chilliest of weather. Know, air flow works with the principle of cozy air leaving via a high gap attracting cooler air in from a lower space - it's not a collection of openings on other wall surfaces of your house and also at the exact same degree, this is what's called a draft. If you have a house with a run connected then the points above are still true, however you ought to also take into consideration the run dimension. The EU optimum legal stocking thickness for a complimentary array bird is (and also allow's encounter it, one of the inspirations for keeping some chickens at home is possibly enhanced or far better well-being) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's maximum one bird per 4m squared. Take a close look at a few of the bargain homes - it could well be your house has the best perches, correct air flow as well as enough nest boxes for a reasonable number of birds, yet will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized piece of ground to spend the day on? Therefore as the claiming goes, "you get what you spend for". You may believe you've grabbed a deal, yet you as well as your group can rue the day you did. Purchase the best house and it will certainly last for a few decades, otherwise longer offered the proper treatment. In the long run your chicken and your fowl maintaining experience will be much the far better for it.
