Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Chicken Coop House Plans in Osage, West Virginia

Usually these standardized versions are built of rapid grown up hardwood - come the very first decline of rainfall they swell, leaving you either barricading a door that will not close, or ripping the doorway furniture off in a vain attempt to release the squawking inhabitants. The very first warm day means the hardwood dries out and fractures, the really felt roofing system bubbles as well as boils, as well as come nightfall the hens choose not to go in. This is not as a result of their dissatisfaction at the decrease of their when attractive apartment yet considering that the hovel is currently a sanctuary for, and possibly crawling with, the poultry caretaker's bane, red mite. Add the fact that it said on the blurb that it would certainly suit 4 huge chickens when that equipping density was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and just what are you entrusted? A few hinges as well as some kindling. A decent coop for thee to four birds must cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this could rely on whether you choose for a free standing house or one with a run affixed. Assuming you are ranging your birds in a huge area and the pop hole door is big enough for the type you keep, after that the major requirements of housing come down to 3 points which will define the number of birds your house will hold; perches, nest boxes and ventilation. The majority of breeds of chicken will perch when they go to roost at night, this perch needs to ideally be 5-8cm broad with smoothed off sides so the foot rests comfortably on it. The perch ought to be above the nest box entrance as chickens will additionally naturally seek the acme to perch. A perch less than that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is by the way when they create one of the most poo) causing stained eggs the following day. They shouldn't nevertheless be so high off the floor of your house that leg injuries might take place when the bird comes down in the early morning. Chickens need concerning 20cm of perch each (in small breeds this is certainly much less), plus if greater than one perch is mounted in the house they ought to be greater than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their next-door neighbors but are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Preferably your house must have a least one nest box for each 3 birds and also these must be off the ground as well as in the darkest location of the house. Your house needs to have appropriate air flow: without it after that condensation will certainly develop every night, even in the chilliest of weather condition. Understand, ventilation works with the concept of warm and comfortable air leaving with a high gap drawing cooler air in from a reduced gap - it's not a set of openings on contrary walls of your house and at the very same degree, this is just what's referred to as a draught. If you have a house with a run affixed after that the factors above are still real, yet you need to also take into consideration the run dimension. The EU optimum lawful equipping density for a cost-free range bird is (as well as let's face it, one of the inspirations for keeping some chickens in your home is potentially boosted or better well-being) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's maximum one bird each 4m settled. Take a close look at a few of the deal houses - it could well be your home has the ideal perches, appropriate air flow as well as sufficient nest boxes for a reasonable variety of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized piece of ground to invest the day on? And so as the saying goes, "you obtain exactly what you spend for". You might assume you've grabbed a deal, however you and your group can rue the day you did. Acquisition the ideal house as well as it will certainly last for a few years, if not longer provided the right treatment. In the end your chicken and also your poultry keeping experience will certainly be much the much better for it.
