Building a Chicken Coop

Well, we are finally done building our chicken coop for the most part. Britton woke up early on Saturday and put the shingles on the top and built the nesting boxes. He had the already done, but with the crazy rainy/snowy weather we had put off moving it to the backyard until today.

We used the lawnmower as a dolly to transport it from the garage to our backyard because I am a wuss and couldn’t carry it. Then we needed to paint the plywood white to help protect it from the elements including the sprinkler system. So we went for a bike ride down to Ace and picked up a little can of exterior paint. We sat down to paint and were done in about 15 minutes. When I saw the white blank canvas, I decided to make it a cuter chicken coop with a custom paint job. Voila! Not bad for a day’s work. What do you think? We can’t wait till the baby chicks are old enough to live there with the Leghorn.

Typically these mass produced designs are created of quick grown up hardwood - come the very first decline of rainfall they swell, leaving you either defending a door that won't shut, or tearing the door furnishings off in a vain effort to launch the squawking occupants. The very first warm day means the timber dries out and also cracks, the felt roofing system bubbles as well as boils, as well as come nightfall the hens choose not to go in. This is not as a result of their disappointment at the decrease of their when eye-catching building but due to the fact that the hovel is now a sanctuary for, and most likely crawling with, the chicken caretaker's nemesis, red mite. Add that it claimed on the blurb that it would certainly fit four large chickens when that stocking thickness was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, as well as what are you entrusted? A number of joints as well as some kindling. A good coop for thee to four birds should cost you in the region of ₤ 300 though this could depend upon whether you choose for a complimentary standing house or one with a run attached. Assuming you are ranging your birds in a big room as well as the pop hole door allows sufficient for the breed you maintain, then the primary needs of housing boil down to 3 points which will define the number of birds your home will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes and also ventilation. The majority of types of chicken will certainly perch when they visit roost at night, this perch needs to ideally be 5-8cm vast with smoothed off edges so the foot rests easily on it. The perch ought to be higher than the nest box access as chickens will certainly additionally naturally try to find the highest point to perch. A perch below that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is incidentally when they create one of the most poo) leading to stained eggs the following day. They shouldn't however be so high off the floor of the house that leg injuries might occur when the bird comes down in the morning. Chickens require concerning 20cm of perch each (in tiny breeds this is undoubtedly much less), plus if more than one perch is installed in your house they should be greater than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their next-door neighbors yet are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Preferably your home ought to have a the very least one nest box for each 3 birds and these must be off the ground and in the darkest area of your house. The house should have adequate air flow: without it after that condensation will develop every night, even in the chilliest of weather condition. Realize, air flow deals with the concept of cozy air leaving via a high space attracting cooler air in from a reduced gap - it's not a collection of openings on contrary wall surfaces of your house and also at the very same level, this is what's referred to as a draft. If you have a house with a run affixed after that the factors above are still real, however you ought to likewise consider the run size. The EU optimum legal stocking density for a complimentary range bird is (and let's face it, one of the motivations for maintaining some hens at home is potentially boosted or better welfare) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's optimal one bird each 4m made even. Take a close look at a few of the deal houses - it could well be your home has the right perches, proper air flow and also ample nest boxes for a practical number of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized item of ground to spend the day on? And so as the claiming goes, "you obtain exactly what you spend for". You might think you've grabbed a bargain, but you as well as your group could possibly rue the day you did. Purchase the right house and also it will last for a few decades, if not longer offered the right therapy. In the end your poultry and your fowl keeping encounter will certainly be much the much better for it.
