The chickens are eating out of my hand!!!!

Baby steps here.  These chickens need to learn that I am a friendly caring benefactor, and not a scary creepygrabber.  And pretty much the only way into the heart of a chicken is through their stomach.  I’ve started going out to check on them every morning and evening, and giving them treats of some sort, usually a handful of cracked corn.  Over the course of the last several days, they have realized that when I come out to see them, they will be getting treats, and they respond accordingly.  They now walk up to the door of the enclosure and talk at me in quiet little honks.  I have slowly been broadcasting the corn for them closer and closer to myself, and finally yesterday they started eating out of my hand.  I’m aware that I am reaching facebook parent level obsession, but I’m not forcing you to watch the video.  But you know, you can if you want to!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Blair, West Virginia Baby chicks are quite charming as well as challenging to resist, but it's ideal to prepare for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare initially by compiling not only the correct products, but additionally the proper knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you simply should offer them with the following: A tidy and cozy environment Plenty of food and water Attention as well as love Environment Your environment could be an easy box, aquarium, feline service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (with no loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a few weeks make use of straw over paper. Note: Avoid utilizing just newspaper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You likewise require something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food as well as an animal bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you could introduce a perch into the habitat to obtain them trained on setting down. Heat To keep your chicks heat you need to offer them with a heat resource. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb also work effectively (my suggestion). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which can take up to 2 months). The freshly hatched out need a temperature level in between 90 as well as 100 levels, as well as every week this could be minimized by approximately 5 levels or so. The warmth resource must be on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are hiding in the other corner of your warmth light, you should minimize the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the warmth (not merely curling up), you need to include some warmth. Home cleaning Sanitation is key and also it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make certain to change the bedding often and also constantly give tidy food as well as water Food as well as water. Chicks expand very quickly which needs plenty of tidy food and also water. Offer enough whatsoever times and check typically to stop dehydrated and also hungry chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and then to a slightly lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks like to get a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others will not use up that task until they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or filth for them to wash in. Interest as well as love There are a few advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First off, they will certainly most likely bond with you and not run away as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as watch their actions, you could catch disease or various other troubles previously. Watch out for wheezing, hopping, or other unhealthy indications. Be sure to additionally check out their poop, as looseness of the bowels can cause matted feathers as well as blocked cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to look out for social problems, such as the smallest chick getting picked on. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are now fully feathered and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your house and move outside right into a coop.
