Corgis and Chicks: Baby Belina

The second in our “Corgis and Chicks” series features my special little lap chicken, Belina II. Belina the first was my “lap hen” back in Austin, and we’ve decided to always have a Buff Orpington named Belina in our flock. Baby Belina is proving to be as sweet as her namesake, happy to cuddle or eat from our hands. I can’t wait to pat her for years to come! (She gets a pardon from any culling in the future and will live to her natural demise.)

Big ears and little – alert and listening.

Pocket is so sweet with her kisses…. though i know her real motivation is the ‘snacks’ that our chickens deposit with frequency. So gross.

Buff Orpingtons are awful sweet! at my Etsy shop – no poop included!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Maple Valley, Washington Baby chicks are quite adorable and tough to stand up to, but it's best to plan for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not only the correct materials, but also the appropriate expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably straightforward, you simply need to supply them with the following: A clean and also warm environment Lots of food and also water Interest and also love Environment Your environment can be a basic box, fish tank, pet cat carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels as well as coverings (without any loose strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing just newspaper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You likewise require something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food and also a pet bird water dispenser from a pet store. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you can introduce a perch into the environment to obtain them educated on perching. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you should supply them with a heat resource. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise function effectively (my referral). Chicks require this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can use up to two months). The freshly hatched out need a temperature level in between 90 and also 100 levels, and also every week this can be lowered by around 5 degrees or so. The heat source ought to be on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are hiding in the other edge of your warmth light, you have to reduce the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not simply curling up), you should include some heat. Housekeeping Cleanliness is crucial and also it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to alter the bedding commonly and constantly offer clean food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks grow very fast which needs a lot of clean food and also water. Supply enough at all times and examine usually to avoid thirsty and also starving chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, and it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, then to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to get a head start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't occupy that activity till they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Focus and love There are a couple of benefits to hanging out with your chicks. First of all, they will certainly probably bond with you and not flee as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as watch their habits, you can catch health problem or other issues earlier. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or other undesirable indications. Make sure to also look at their poop, as diarrhea can lead to matted plumes and clogged cloaca. Lastly, it is very important to look out for social problems, such as the smallest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently fully feathered as well as its time for them to leave the security of your home and relocate outside right into a coop. Look into our section on chicken cages to find out more about coops and also correct cage habitats.
