Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Forestburg Texas is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Forestburg, Texas Baby chicks are extremely charming and also tough to stand up to, but it's best to plan for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by gathering not only the right materials, however also the correct knowledge to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly basic, you simply should provide them with the following: A tidy as well as warm and comfortable habitat A lot of food and water Interest and love Habitat Your environment can be a simple box, aquarium, cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (with no loosened strings!) to begin, and after a couple of weeks use straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of just paper or various other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand misshapen. You also require something to dish out food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water meal from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food as well as an animal bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Also, as the chicks age you can introduce a perch into the environment to obtain them trained on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you have to provide them with a heat source. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb additionally work extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks need this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which could take up to 2 months). The freshly hatched out need a temperature level between 90 and also 100 degrees, and also weekly this could be lowered by around 5 degrees or so. The warmth source should get on just one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are concealing in the other corner of your warmth lamp, you have to decrease the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not merely snuggling), you need to add some warmth. House cleaning Sanitation is vital as well as it maintains your chicks healthy. Make sure to change the bed linen commonly and always give clean food and water Food and also water. Chicks grow quite fast which calls for lots of clean food and also water. Provide sufficient at all times and check usually to prevent dehydrated and also starving chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that switch to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and then to a slightly lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others won't occupy that activity until they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Attention as well as love There are a couple of benefits to hanging out with your chicks. Firstly, they will more than likely bond with you and also not escape as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also enjoy their actions, you can catch illness or various other troubles earlier. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or other undesirable indications. Make sure to also consider their poop, as diarrhea could cause matted feathers and clogged up cloaca. Last but not least, it is necessary to look out for social concerns, such as the smallest chick getting badgered. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are currently totally feathered and also its time for them to leave the security of your home and move outside right into a coop. Look into our part on chicken cages for more information concerning cages as well as appropriate cage environments.
