Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Most of the time these standardized models are created of rapid grown up wood - come the initial decrease of rain they swell, leaving you either fortifying a door that won't shut, or ripping the doorway furnishings off in a vain effort to release the squawking inhabitants. The very first cozy day implies the timber dries and splits, the felt roofing bubbles and also boils, and also come nightfall the chickens choose not to go in. This is not as a result of their dissatisfaction at the decrease of their as soon as appealing property yet since the hovel is now a place for, as well as probably abounding, the fowl caretaker's nemesis, red mite. Add the fact that it stated on the blurb that it would fit 4 big chickens when that equipping density was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and also just what are you entrusted? A number of joints as well as some kindling. A good coop for thee to 4 birds need to cost you approximately ₤ 300 though this can depend on whether you choose for a totally free standing house or one with a run connected. Assuming you are ranging your birds in a big space and also the pop hole door is big enough for the breed you keep, then the main requirements of housing come down to 3 points which will define the variety of birds your house will hold; perches, nest boxes as well as ventilation. The majority of types of chicken will perch when they go to roost in the evening, this perch ought to preferably be 5-8cm broad with smoothed off edges so the foot rests comfortably on it. The perch should be more than the nest box entrance as chickens will certainly also normally look for the highest point to perch. A perch less than that will have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is incidentally when they generate one of the most poo) causing stained eggs the following day. They shouldn't nonetheless be so high off the flooring of the house that leg injuries could possibly happen when the bird gets down in the early morning. Chickens require about 20cm of perch each (in tiny breeds this is certainly less), plus if more than one perch is set up in your house they need to be more than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their next-door neighbors however are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Preferably your home should have a the very least one nest box for every three birds and also these should be off the ground and also in the darkest location of your house. The house should have appropriate air flow: without it after that condensation will certainly accumulate every evening, also in the coldest of weather. Know, air flow works on the concept of warm air leaving via a high gap drawing cooler air in from a reduced gap - it's not a collection of openings on opposite walls of the house and at the very same level, this is exactly what's referred to as a draught. If you have a house with a run affixed then the factors above are still true, but you should also think about the run size. The EU optimum lawful stocking thickness for a cost-free array bird is (as well as allow's face it, one of the inspirations for keeping some chickens in your home is perhaps improved or much better welfare) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's maximum one bird each 4m settled. Take a close look at some of the deal houses - it could well be the house has the appropriate perches, appropriate air flow as well as ample nest boxes for an affordable variety of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized item of ground to spend the day on? And so as the claiming goes, "you get what you pay for". You might think you've got a bargain, but you and your group could possibly rue the day you did. Acquisition the right house and it will certainly last for a few decades, if not longer given the correct treatment. In the end your chicken as well as your fowl keeping encounter will be much the much better for it.
