Building a Chicken Coop

Well, we are finally done building our chicken coop for the most part. Britton woke up early on Saturday and put the shingles on the top and built the nesting boxes. He had the already done, but with the crazy rainy/snowy weather we had put off moving it to the backyard until today.

We used the lawnmower as a dolly to transport it from the garage to our backyard because I am a wuss and couldn’t carry it. Then we needed to paint the plywood white to help protect it from the elements including the sprinkler system. So we went for a bike ride down to Ace and picked up a little can of exterior paint. We sat down to paint and were done in about 15 minutes. When I saw the white blank canvas, I decided to make it a cuter chicken coop with a custom paint job. Voila! Not bad for a day’s work. What do you think? We can’t wait till the baby chicks are old enough to live there with the Leghorn.

More often than not these mass produced versions are constructed of fast grown lumber - come the first decrease of rain they swell, leaving you either barricading a doorway that will not shut, or tearing the door furniture off in a vain attempt to launch the squawking occupants. The very first warm and comfortable day means the hardwood dries and splits, the felt roof bubbles as well as boils, as well as come nightfall the hens refuse to enter. This is not due to their dissatisfaction at the decrease of their when desirable commercial property however because the hovel is now a haven for, and also most likely crawling with, the fowl caretaker's bane, red mite. Add on the fact that it stated on the blurb that it would fit 4 big hens when that stocking density was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and just what are you left with? A number of hinges as well as some kindling. A respectable coop for thee to 4 birds ought to cost you around ₤ 300 though this could depend upon whether you elect for a totally free standing house or one with a run attached. Assuming you are ranging your birds in a large room and the pop hole door allows sufficient for the type you maintain, after that the primary demands of housing come down to three factors which will specify the variety of birds your home will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes as well as ventilation. A lot of types of chicken will certainly perch when they visit roost at night, this perch must preferably be 5-8cm large with smoothed off sides so the foot sits conveniently on it. The perch should be higher than the nest box entry as chickens will certainly likewise normally try to find the highest point to perch. A perch below that will have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is by the way when they produce the most poo) leading to stained eggs the following day. They shouldn't nonetheless be so high off the flooring of your house that leg injuries can occur when the bird comes down in the morning. Chickens need regarding 20cm of perch each (in small types this is obviously less), plus if more than one perch is mounted in your home they must be more than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their next-door neighbors yet are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Preferably your house must have a the very least one nest box for every single 3 birds and also these need to be off the ground and in the darkest location of the house. Your house ought to have adequate air flow: without it after that condensation will accumulate every night, even in the chilliest of weather condition. Know, ventilation works with the principle of warm air leaving via a high void attracting cooler air in from a lower void - it's not a collection of openings on contrary wall surfaces of the house as well as at the very same degree, this is exactly what's known as a draught. If you have a house with a run affixed then the points above are still real, but you should also consider the run dimension. The EU maximum legal equipping density for a complimentary array bird is (and also let's face it, one of the motivations for maintaining some hens in your home is potentially improved or better well-being) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's maximum one bird each 4m settled. Take a close check out a few of the bargain houses - it could well be the house has the best perches, right air flow as well as adequate nest boxes for an affordable variety of birds, but will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized item of ground to invest the day on? And so as the stating goes, "you get just what you pay for". You may assume you've grabbed a bargain, however you as well as your flock could possibly rue the day you did. Purchase the ideal house and also it will certainly last for a couple of years, if not longer provided the correct treatment. Eventually your fowl and also your fowl keeping encounter will be much the much better for it.
