Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Fryburg Pennsylvania * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Fryburg Pennsylvania is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Fryburg, Pennsylvania Baby chicks are very adorable as well as tough to resist, yet it's ideal to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare initially by collecting not only the proper products, however likewise the proper understanding to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you merely have to give them with the following: A clean as well as warm environment A lot of food as well as water Focus and love Environment Your habitat can be a basic box, fish tank, feline carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (with no loosened strings!) to start, and also after a couple of weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of just paper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You likewise need something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food and an animal bird water dispenser from a pet dog shop. Also, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch right into the habitat to get them educated on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks warm you have to give them with a warmth resource. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb likewise work very well (my suggestion). Chicks need this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could occupy to 2 months). The recently hatched need a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and weekly this could be lowered by around 5 degrees approximately. The heat source ought to be on just one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are concealing in the contrary edge of your warmth light, you have to minimize the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not just curling up), you should add some warmth. House cleaning Sanitation is crucial as well as it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to alter the bed linen often and consistently provide tidy food and water Food as well as water. Chicks expand quite quick which calls for a lot of clean food and water. Offer sufficient at all times and also check often to prevent dehydrated as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first two months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, then to a somewhat reduced protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't take up that task till they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Interest and love There are a couple of advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First off, they will more than likely bond with you as well as not flee as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and view their behavior, you can catch health problem or other issues previously. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or various other unhealthy signs. Be sure to likewise take a look at their poop, as diarrhea can cause matted feathers as well as clogged cloaca. Lastly, it is very important to watch out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick getting picked on. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently completely feathered as well as its time for them to leave the security of your residence as well as move outside right into a cage. Look into our area on chicken cages to find out more concerning coops and also appropriate cage habitats.
