New Baby Chicks Have Arrived

I just had to share some pictures of our newest babies.  They are black sexlinks and one golden sexlink.  They are sooo cute.  We just got them yesterday, but they are 10 days old.  Since it has done nothing but rain, 2.75 inches between yesterday and today, they are safe and dry in the garage.  When everything dries out they will go to the outdoor brooder.

I’ll post more pictures as time goes.

PATypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Centre Hall Pennsylvania * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Centre Hall Pennsylvania is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Centre Hall, Pennsylvania Baby chicks are really charming as well as tough to resist, but it's ideal to plan for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by gathering not just the proper products, however additionally the correct understanding to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is fairly simple, you merely have to provide them with the following: A tidy as well as cozy habitat A lot of food and also water Interest and love Habitat Your habitat can be a simple box, fish tank, feline provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without any loose strings!) to start, as well as after a few weeks make use of straw over paper. Note: Avoid making use of just newspaper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You also require something to dish out food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food as well as a pet dog bird water dispenser from an animal store. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you can present a perch right into the habitat to obtain them trained on setting down. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you have to supply them with a heat resource. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb likewise work very well (my recommendation). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could occupy to two months). The recently hatched out need a temperature level in between 90 and also 100 levels, and also each week this could be minimized by about 5 degrees or so. The heat source should be on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are hiding in the opposite corner of your warmth light, you need to decrease the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not merely curling up), you have to add some heat. Home cleaning Sanitation is key and also it keeps your chicks healthy. Make certain to change the bed linens frequently as well as constantly give tidy food and also water Food and water. Chicks grow very quickly which needs a lot of tidy food and also water. Supply enough whatsoever times as well as check usually to stop dehydrated and also starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and after that to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a head start on taking dust baths, while others won't use up that task till they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Focus and love There are a few advantages to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly probably bond with you and not escape as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and view their behavior, you can catch illness or other troubles earlier. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or other undesirable indicators. Make certain to additionally check out their poop, as looseness of the bowels can lead to matted feathers and also obstructed cloaca. Last but not least, it is important to look out for social concerns, such as the smallest chick getting badgered. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are now fully feathery and also its time for them to leave the security of your residence and also move outside right into a coop. Check out our section on chicken cages for more information regarding cages and proper cage environments.
