A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Delano, Pennsylvania Baby chicks are really cute and challenging to withstand, but it's finest to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by compiling not only the correct materials, however additionally the proper knowledge to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably straightforward, you simply should provide them with the following: A tidy as well as cozy habitat A lot of food as well as water Focus and love Habitat Your environment could be a straightforward box, fish tank, feline carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without loose strings!) to begin, and also after a few weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You also need something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water meal from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food and an animal bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch right into the environment to obtain them trained on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks warm you need to give them with a warmth source. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb also function effectively (my suggestion). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could occupy to 2 months). The freshly hatched out require a temperature level between 90 and also 100 levels, and also each week this can be decreased by about 5 levels or so. The warmth resource must get on simply one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are concealing in the other edge of your heat light, you should reduce the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the heat (not simply snuggling), you should put some heat. Housekeeping Cleanliness is vital and it maintains your chicks healthy. Make sure to change the bed linen usually and consistently give tidy food as well as water Food and also water. Chicks grow extremely fast which requires plenty of tidy food and water. Supply sufficient at all times and also check typically to prevent parched and hungry chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, and it is available in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, then change to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks like to obtain a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't occupy that activity till they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Focus and love There are a couple of benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly most likely bond with you and not run away as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and watch their behavior, you can capture ailment or other troubles earlier. Watch out for hissing, limping, or other undesirable indications. Make sure to additionally check out their poop, as looseness of the bowels could cause matted feathers and also blocked cloaca. Finally, it is important to keep an eye out for social problems, such as the smallest chick getting teased. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathered as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your residence and move outside into a cage. Take a look at our section on chicken coops to learn more concerning cages as well as proper coop environments.
