On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

PATypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Custer City Pennsylvania * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Cons of buying baby chicks in Custer City Pennsylvania * Order early to get the best selection. Certain breeds sell out fast, sometimes as early as 6 months in advance of shipping! If you are wanting a certain breed it's best to order your chicks in the fall before their orders sell out.

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Custer City Pennsylvania is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Custer City, Pennsylvania Baby chicks are extremely adorable and challenging to withstand, yet it's finest to prepare for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare initially by collecting not only the proper products, but likewise the appropriate knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you simply should supply them with the following: A clean and also warm and comfortable environment Lots of food as well as water Focus and love Environment Your habitat can be an easy box, fish tank, pet cat service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (with no loosened strings!) to begin, and after a few weeks utilize straw over paper. Note: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or various other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You likewise need something to provide food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food and a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet dog shop. Also, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch right into the habitat to obtain them educated on perching. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you need to provide them with a warmth resource. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb additionally work very well (my referral). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which could occupy to two months). The newly hatched out need a temperature between 90 and also 100 levels, as well as weekly this could be decreased by around 5 levels approximately. The heat source ought to get on just one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the contrary edge of your warmth light, you need to decrease the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not merely cuddling), you need to add some heat. Housekeeping Sanitation is crucial and also it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to transform the bedding often and also constantly supply clean food and water Food and also water. Chicks expand quite quick which requires a lot of clean food and water. Supply enough in any way times as well as examine typically to avoid parched and also starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first two months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, then to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking filth baths, while others will not occupy that task till they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Focus and love There are a few benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly most likely bond with you and not flee as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as view their actions, you can catch illness or other issues earlier. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or various other undesirable indicators. Make sure to also check out their poop, as diarrhea could lead to matted plumes as well as stopped up cloaca. Finally, it is very important to watch out for social problems, such as the smallest chick obtaining teased. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathered and also its time for them to leave the security of your residence and also relocate outside right into a cage. Take a look at our section on chicken coops to learn more about cages and also correct coop habitats.
