Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

More often than not these standardized versions are created of fast grown timber - come the first decrease of rainfall they swell, leaving you either blockading a door that will not shut, or ripping the doorway furniture off in a vain attempt to launch the squawking citizens. The very first warm and comfortable day means the timber dries and also cracks, the felt roofing system bubbles as well as boils, as well as come nightfall the chickens choose not to enter. This is not as a result of their disappointment at the decline of their as soon as eye-catching home but due to the fact that the hovel is now a place for, as well as probably crawling with, the fowl keeper's nemesis, red mite. Add on that it stated on the blurb that it would suit 4 big chickens when that equipping thickness was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, as well as just what are you entrusted? A few joints and also some kindling. A decent coop for thee to 4 birds must cost you around ₤ 300 though this can depend upon whether you choose for a totally free standing house or one with a run affixed. Assuming you are ranging your birds in a large room as well as the pop opening door is big enough for the type you keep, after that the major demands of real estate come down to three factors which will certainly define the number of birds the house will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes and ventilation. Many breeds of chicken will perch when they go to roost at night, this perch needs to preferably be 5-8cm large with smoothed off sides so the foot rests pleasantly on it. The perch should be more than the nest box entry as chickens will likewise normally seek the highest point to perch. A perch below that will have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is incidentally when they generate one of the most poo) leading to dirtied eggs the following day. They shouldn't however be so high off the floor of your house that leg injuries can take place when the bird comes down in the early morning. Chickens require regarding 20cm of perch each (in tiny breeds this is obviously much less), plus if more than one perch is set up in the house they must be more than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their neighbors yet are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Ideally your home should have a least one nest box for every single 3 birds as well as these should be off the ground as well as in the darkest area of your house. Your home should have ample ventilation: without it after that condensation will develop every night, even in the chilliest of climate. Be aware, air flow works on the concept of cozy air leaving via a high space attracting cooler air in from a lower gap - it's not a collection of openings on other wall surfaces of your house as well as at the exact same degree, this is exactly what's called a draft. If you have a house with a run attached then the points above are still true, yet you must likewise consider the run dimension. The EU maximum lawful stocking thickness for a cost-free variety bird is (as well as allow's encounter it, one of the inspirations for maintaining some hens in your home is potentially enhanced or far better welfare) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's optimal one bird per 4m made even. Take a close take a look at some of the bargain houses - it could well be your house has the right perches, right ventilation and ample nest boxes for a sensible variety of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized item of ground to spend the day on? And so as the stating goes, "you get what you pay for". You may assume you've grabbed a deal, yet you and your flock could rue the day you did. Acquisition the appropriate house as well as it will certainly last for a couple of years, if not longer provided the right treatment. In the long run your chicken as well as your fowl maintaining encounter will certainly be much the much better for it.
