Building a Chicken Coop

Well, we are finally done building our chicken coop for the most part. Britton woke up early on Saturday and put the shingles on the top and built the nesting boxes. He had the already done, but with the crazy rainy/snowy weather we had put off moving it to the backyard until today.

We used the lawnmower as a dolly to transport it from the garage to our backyard because I am a wuss and couldn’t carry it. Then we needed to paint the plywood white to help protect it from the elements including the sprinkler system. So we went for a bike ride down to Ace and picked up a little can of exterior paint. We sat down to paint and were done in about 15 minutes. When I saw the white blank canvas, I decided to make it a cuter chicken coop with a custom paint job. Voila! Not bad for a day’s work. What do you think? We can’t wait till the baby chicks are old enough to live there with the Leghorn.

Typically these standardized designs are created of rapid grown hardwood - come the first decrease of rain they swell, leaving you either blockading a doorway that won't close, or tearing the door furnishings off in a vain effort to launch the squawking inhabitants. The very first warm day indicates the lumber dries out and splits, the really felt roof covering bubbles and boils, and also come nightfall the hens refuse to enter. This is not due to their disappointment at the decrease of their when eye-catching residential property but considering that the hovel is now a sanctuary for, and also most likely abounding, the chicken caretaker's bane, red mite. Add the fact that it claimed on the blurb that it would certainly fit 4 large chickens when that stocking density was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and exactly what are you left with? A few hinges as well as some kindling. A decent coop for thee to four birds need to cost you around ₤ 300 though this can depend upon whether you elect for a cost-free standing house or one with a run attached. Presuming you are ranging your birds in a big space and the pop hole doorway is big sufficient for the type you keep, after that the primary requirements of housing boil down to three factors which will certainly define the variety of birds the house will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes and air flow. A lot of types of chicken will perch when they visit roost during the night, this perch must preferably be 5-8cm wide with smoothed off sides so the foot rests pleasantly on it. The perch should be above the nest box entry as chickens will likewise normally seek the acme to perch. A perch lower than that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is by the way when they create one of the most poo) causing dirtied eggs the following day. They should not however be so high off the flooring of your house that leg injuries could possibly happen when the bird gets down in the early morning. Chickens need concerning 20cm of perch each (in tiny breeds this is clearly much less), plus if more than one perch is installed in your home they ought to be greater than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their next-door neighbors but are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Preferably your house must have a the very least one nest box for every single three birds and also these need to be off the ground as well as in the darkest area of your house. Your home must have sufficient ventilation: without it then condensation will certainly develop every night, even in the coldest of weather condition. Realize, air flow works with the principle of warm and comfortable air leaving through a high space drawing cooler air in from a lower gap - it's not a set of holes on contrary walls of the house and at the very same level, this is what's known as a draught. If you have a house with a run attached after that the points above are still real, however you must additionally take into consideration the run size. The EU optimum lawful stocking thickness for a free variety bird is (and let's face it, one of the motivations for keeping some chickens at home is perhaps improved or far better welfare) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's optimal one bird per 4m made even. Take a close take a look at some of the deal homes - it could well be your home has the appropriate perches, appropriate ventilation as well as enough nest boxes for a practical number of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized piece of ground to invest the day on? And so as the saying goes, "you get exactly what you spend for". You may assume you've got hold of a bargain, yet you as well as your group could possibly rue the day you did. Purchase the ideal house and also it will certainly last for a couple of years, if not longer provided the right treatment. Eventually your poultry and also your poultry keeping encounter will certainly be a lot the better for it.
