Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Kiowa, Oklahoma Baby chicks are extremely adorable and also hard to withstand, yet it's best to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by gathering not only the right materials, yet likewise the proper expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly basic, you simply have to supply them with the following: A tidy and warm and comfortable environment A lot of food and water Interest and also love Habitat Your environment could be a simple box, fish tank, feline service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (with no loosened strings!) to begin, as well as after a few weeks use straw over paper. Note: Avoid making use of only newspaper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You also need something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food and also a pet dog bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Additionally, as the chicks get older you can present a perch right into the environment to obtain them trained on setting down. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you need to supply them with a warmth resource. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb likewise function effectively (my suggestion). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which can occupy to two months). The newly hatched out require a temperature level between 90 and 100 degrees, and also weekly this can be lowered by about 5 degrees approximately. The warmth source should get on just one side of the cage to allow chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are hiding in the opposite edge of your heat light, you should decrease the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not merely snuggling), you have to put some warmth. Home cleaning Sanitation is crucial and it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to transform the bed linens usually and also constantly supply tidy food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks grow really quick which needs a lot of clean food and water. Offer sufficient whatsoever times and examine often to prevent thirsty as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, and also it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, after that change to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and then to a slightly reduced healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a head start on taking dust baths, while others won't use up that task up until they are older. If you have the room in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Interest as well as love There are a few advantages to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly more than likely bond with you and not run away as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and see their actions, you can catch illness or various other issues earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or various other harmful indications. Make certain to additionally consider their poop, as diarrhea could cause matted plumes and also stopped up cloaca. Lastly, it is important to watch out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick obtaining badgered. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are currently fully feathered and also its time for them to leave the safety of your home and also move outside right into a coop.
