Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Fowl real estate is a proceedings in point. It's also a classic example of the good old bandwagon being got on as numerous prospective chicken real estate professionals pitch a selection of lodging asserting to be the ideal option to your chicken housing requirements. Chicken Coop And Run For Sale in Newbury, Ohio

Usually these standardized designs are created of fast grown up hardwood - come the first decrease of rainfall they swell, leaving you either defending a door that will not shut, or tearing the door furniture off in a vain attempt to launch the squawking inhabitants. The initial cozy day indicates the timber dries out as well as cracks, the really felt roof bubbles and also boils, as well as come nightfall the chickens choose not to go in. This is not because of their disappointment at the decrease of their as soon as appealing residential property however due to the fact that the hovel is now a place for, and also probably abounding, the chicken caretaker's bane, red mite. Add that it said on the blurb that it would suit four large chickens when that stocking density was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and also just what are you entrusted? A few hinges and some kindling. A respectable coop for thee to 4 birds should cost you around ₤ 300 though this can rely on whether you elect for a totally free standing house or one with a run affixed. Assuming you are varying your birds in a big space and also the pop opening doorway is big enough for the breed you keep, then the major needs of real estate boil down to three factors which will specify the number of birds your home will hold; perches, nest boxes as well as ventilation. Most breeds of chicken will certainly perch when they go to roost during the night, this perch must ideally be 5-8cm vast with smoothed off edges so the foot sits pleasantly on it. The perch needs to be above the nest box entry as chickens will certainly likewise naturally search for the highest point to perch. A perch lower than that will have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is by the way when they create one of the most poo) resulting in dirtied eggs the list below day. They should not nevertheless be so high off the floor of your house that leg injuries could possibly take place when the bird comes down in the early morning. Chickens need regarding 20cm of perch each (in tiny breeds this is clearly much less), plus if more than one perch is set up in your house they ought to be more than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their next-door neighbors but are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Preferably your home should have a the very least one nest box for every 3 birds and also these must be off the ground as well as in the darkest location of your home. The house needs to have ample air flow: without it then condensation will build up every evening, also in the chilliest of weather condition. Be aware, ventilation deals with the principle of cozy air leaving through a high space drawing cooler air in from a reduced gap - it's not a collection of holes on contrary wall surfaces of your house and at the exact same level, this is what's known as a draft. If you have a house with a run connected after that the points above are still real, however you should also think about the run size. The EU maximum lawful equipping thickness for a totally free range bird is (and allow's face it, one of the inspirations for maintaining some chickens at home is possibly improved or better well-being) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's maximum one bird each 4m settled. Take a close look at a few of the deal houses - it could well be the house has the best perches, proper ventilation and also adequate nest boxes for an affordable variety of birds, yet will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized item of ground to invest the day on? Therefore as the stating goes, "you obtain exactly what you pay for". You may think you've grabbed a bargain, but you as well as your flock could possibly rue the day you did. Acquisition the appropriate house and also it will last for a couple of decades, otherwise longer provided the appropriate treatment. In the end your chicken and also your chicken keeping encounter will be considerably the much better for it.
