Building a Chicken Coop

Well, we are finally done building our chicken coop for the most part. Britton woke up early on Saturday and put the shingles on the top and built the nesting boxes. He had the already done, but with the crazy rainy/snowy weather we had put off moving it to the backyard until today.

We used the lawnmower as a dolly to transport it from the garage to our backyard because I am a wuss and couldn’t carry it. Then we needed to paint the plywood white to help protect it from the elements including the sprinkler system. So we went for a bike ride down to Ace and picked up a little can of exterior paint. We sat down to paint and were done in about 15 minutes. When I saw the white blank canvas, I decided to make it a cuter chicken coop with a custom paint job. Voila! Not bad for a day’s work. What do you think? We can’t wait till the baby chicks are old enough to live there with the Leghorn.

Generally these mass produced versions are constructed of rapid grown up lumber - come the very first drop of rainfall they swell, leaving you either defending a door that won't close, or tearing the door furniture off in a vain effort to launch the squawking citizens. The first warm and comfortable day implies the hardwood dries and cracks, the felt roofing system bubbles as well as boils, and come nightfall the chickens refuse to enter. This is not because of their dissatisfaction at the decrease of their as soon as eye-catching property yet since the hovel is currently a place for, and most likely abounding, the chicken keeper's bane, red mite. Add the fact that it stated on the blurb that it would match 4 huge chickens when that equipping density was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and exactly what are you entrusted? A couple of hinges and some kindling. A suitable coop for thee to four birds should cost you around ₤ 300 though this could depend on whether you choose for a cost-free standing house or one with a run connected. Assuming you are ranging your birds in a big space and also the pop opening door allows enough for the type you maintain, then the major needs of real estate boil down to three factors which will certainly define the variety of birds your house will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes and ventilation. Most types of chicken will perch when they visit roost at night, this perch needs to preferably be 5-8cm vast with smoothed off edges so the foot rests comfortably on it. The perch ought to be more than the nest box entrance as chickens will certainly additionally normally try to find the highest point to perch. A perch less than that will have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is incidentally when they generate one of the most poo) resulting in soiled eggs the list below day. They shouldn't nevertheless be so high off the flooring of your house that leg injuries could possibly take place when the bird gets down in the morning. Chickens require concerning 20cm of perch each (in little breeds this is clearly less), plus if more than one perch is set up in your home they ought to be more than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their next-door neighbors but are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Preferably the house should have a the very least one nest box for every single 3 birds as well as these ought to be off the ground and in the darkest location of the house. Your home ought to have sufficient air flow: without it after that condensation will accumulate every evening, also in the chilliest of climate. Realize, ventilation works on the principle of warm air leaving with a high void attracting cooler air in from a lower space - it's not a set of holes on contrary walls of your home and also at the exact same level, this is exactly what's known as a draught. If you have a house with a run attached then the factors above are still true, but you must likewise take into consideration the run size. The EU optimum lawful equipping density for a cost-free range bird is (and let's face it, one of the inspirations for keeping some hens in your home is perhaps enhanced or far better welfare) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's maximum one bird each 4m made even. Take a close check out some of the bargain residences - it could well be your house has the appropriate perches, appropriate ventilation and adequate nest boxes for a reasonable variety of birds, yet will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized item of ground to spend the day on? Therefore as the stating goes, "you get what you pay for". You may assume you've grabbed a deal, however you and also your flock could rue the day you did. Purchase the ideal house and it will last for a few years, otherwise longer provided the correct therapy. In the end your chicken as well as your fowl maintaining experience will certainly be much the better for it.
