Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Lockwood, New York Baby chicks are extremely charming and also difficult to stand up to, however it's best to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by compiling not only the correct materials, but additionally the correct expertise to care for them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably simple, you merely need to supply them with the following: A clean and warm and comfortable environment A lot of food and also water Interest and love Habitat Your habitat can be a straightforward box, fish tank, feline service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without loosened strings!) to begin, as well as after a couple of weeks use straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid using just newspaper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You also require something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food as well as a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Likewise, as the chicks get older you can present a perch right into the environment to get them trained on perching. Heat To maintain your chicks heat you have to offer them with a warmth resource. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb additionally function extremely well (my referral). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could take up to 2 months). The freshly hatched out need a temperature between 90 and also 100 levels, and also every week this can be decreased by approximately 5 levels or so. The heat resource should get on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are hiding in the opposite edge of your warmth light, you have to minimize the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not just cuddling), you need to add some heat. Home cleaning Sanitation is key as well as it keeps your chicks healthy. Be sure to change the bedding usually and always supply clean food and also water Food and also water. Chicks grow extremely quickly which needs lots of clean food and water. Provide enough in any way times and also check commonly to avoid parched and starving chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, and it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the very first 2 months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and after that to a somewhat lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks prefer to get a head start on taking dust bathrooms, while others will not use up that task until they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dust for them to shower in. Attention and also love There are a couple of advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly more than likely bond with you and not escape as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also view their behavior, you could capture disease or various other problems earlier. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or various other undesirable indications. Be sure to also consider their poop, as looseness of the bowels could result in matted feathers and blocked cloaca. Finally, it is essential to keep an eye out for social issues, such as the littlest chick getting picked on. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are now fully feathered as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your residence as well as relocate outside right into a coop. Look into our section on chicken cages for more information regarding cages as well as appropriate cage habitats.
