Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Fort Plain, New York Baby chicks are quite adorable and also hard to withstand, however it's finest to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not just the appropriate products, yet also the appropriate understanding to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you just need to supply them with the following: A clean and cozy environment A lot of food and also water Focus and love Environment Your environment can be a basic box, aquarium, feline service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without any loose strings!) to start, as well as after a few weeks utilize straw over paper. Note: Avoid utilizing just paper or various other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You likewise need something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food and a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet store. Likewise, as the chicks get older you can present a perch into the habitat to get them trained on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you have to offer them with a warmth source. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also function effectively (my recommendation). Chicks need this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which can use up to two months). The freshly hatched out need a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and also weekly this can be decreased by about 5 levels approximately. The warmth resource need to be on simply one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the contrary edge of your warmth light, you have to reduce the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not just cuddling), you should add some warmth. Home cleaning Cleanliness is key and it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to alter the bed linens frequently and also constantly give tidy food and water Food and water. Chicks grow very quickly which needs a lot of clean food and also water. Provide sufficient whatsoever times and also examine commonly to avoid dehydrated as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and then to a slightly lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking dirt baths, while others won't use up that activity until they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Attention and also love There are a few benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. First off, they will certainly more than likely bond with you and also not escape as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and enjoy their habits, you can catch illness or other issues earlier. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or other harmful signs. Be sure to additionally consider their poop, as looseness of the bowels could result in matted feathers as well as clogged up cloaca. Finally, it is important to watch out for social issues, such as the smallest chick getting teased. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are currently totally feathery and also its time for them to leave the security of your residence and move outside into a coop. Look into our part on chicken cages to read more concerning coops as well as correct coop environments.
