A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Copenhagen, New York Baby chicks are extremely adorable and challenging to stand up to, yet it's ideal to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by gathering not just the appropriate materials, but likewise the proper expertise to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively simple, you simply have to give them with the following: A clean and warm and comfortable habitat Plenty of food and water Focus and also love Habitat Your habitat could be a simple box, aquarium, cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without any loose strings!) to start, as well as after a few weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You also require something to dish out food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food as well as a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Additionally, as the chicks age you could introduce a perch right into the environment to get them educated on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you need to offer them with a heat resource. This can be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb also function extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could occupy to two months). The freshly hatched need a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 levels, as well as each week this could be lowered by roughly 5 levels approximately. The warmth source should be on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the other corner of your warmth lamp, you should decrease the temperature. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not merely curling up), you need to put some warmth. Housekeeping Tidiness is key and also it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Make certain to alter the bed linens frequently and consistently give clean food as well as water Food as well as water. Chicks expand quite quick which calls for plenty of clean food as well as water. Offer sufficient whatsoever times and inspect often to avoid dehydrated and starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial two months, then switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks want to get a head start on taking filth bathrooms, while others will not take up that activity up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Attention and also love There are a couple of benefits to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will probably bond with you as well as not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also see their habits, you can catch disease or various other issues earlier. Watch out for wheezing, hopping, or other harmful indications. Make sure to likewise take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could lead to matted feathers as well as obstructed cloaca. Finally, it is necessary to keep an eye out for social issues, such as the littlest chick getting teased. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathery as well as its time for them to leave the security of your house and also relocate outside into a coop. Check out our part on chicken cages for more information concerning cages and also correct coop environments.
