A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

How to Care for your new baby chickens in East Hanover, New Jersey Baby chicks are really cute as well as tough to withstand, yet it's finest to plan for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not just the appropriate products, yet additionally the correct knowledge to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you just need to provide them with the following: A tidy as well as cozy environment A lot of food as well as water Attention and love Habitat Your environment could be a basic box, aquarium, feline provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (with no loosened strings!) to start, and also after a couple of weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid making use of just paper or various other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could expand malformed. You likewise require something to provide food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food and also a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet store. Additionally, as the chicks grow older you can present a perch into the environment to obtain them educated on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks heat you need to provide them with a warmth resource. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb likewise function effectively (my suggestion). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could use up to two months). The newly hatched out require a temperature in between 90 and 100 levels, as well as each week this can be lowered by around 5 degrees or so. The warmth source should get on simply one side of the cage to allow chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the other corner of your warmth lamp, you should decrease the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not simply snuggling), you have to add some heat. Housekeeping Tidiness is vital as well as it keeps your chicks healthy. Make sure to alter the bed linens frequently and also always supply clean food and also water Food and also water. Chicks grow really quickly which needs a lot of clean food as well as water. Give enough whatsoever times and also examine often to prevent parched and starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, after that change to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, then to a slightly reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks like to get a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others will not use up that activity until they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Interest as well as love There are a couple of advantages to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly most likely bond with you and also not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also watch their behavior, you could capture health problem or various other issues earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or other harmful indicators. Make certain to also consider their poop, as looseness of the bowels could cause matted feathers and clogged up cloaca. Lastly, it is necessary to keep an eye out for social problems, such as the littlest chick obtaining picked on. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathered as well as its time for them to leave the security of your residence and relocate outside into a coop. Take a look at our section on chicken coops to find out more concerning coops and also proper coop habitats.
