Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Chicken Coop Tips in Durham, New Hampshire

Generally these standardized models are constructed of fast grown timber - come the initial drop of rain they swell, leaving you either blockading a doorway that will not shut, or tearing the door furniture off in a vain effort to launch the squawking occupants. The initial warm day means the hardwood dries and also splits, the felt roof bubbles as well as boils, and come nightfall the hens refuse to enter. This is not as a result of their disappointment at the decline of their when appealing property but since the hovel is now a sanctuary for, and probably crawling with, the poultry caretaker's nemesis, red mite. Add the fact that it stated on the blurb that it would certainly match four big chickens when that stocking thickness was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, as well as what are you entrusted? A number of hinges as well as some kindling. A decent coop for thee to 4 birds need to cost you in the region of ₤ 300 though this could rely on whether you choose for a totally free standing house or one with a run affixed. Presuming you are varying your birds in a large area and also the pop hole doorway allows enough for the breed you keep, after that the primary demands of real estate boil down to 3 factors which will certainly specify the number of birds your house will hold; perches, nest boxes as well as ventilation. Most breeds of chicken will perch when they visit roost at night, this perch needs to preferably be 5-8cm broad with smoothed off edges so the foot rests conveniently on it. The perch should be higher than the nest box entry as chickens will also normally search for the highest point to perch. A perch below that will have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is by the way when they create the most poo) resulting in soiled eggs the following day. They should not nevertheless be so high off the floor of the house that leg injuries can happen when the bird gets down in the morning. Chickens need regarding 20cm of perch each (in little breeds this is undoubtedly less), plus if greater than one perch is mounted in the house they ought to be more than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their neighbors yet are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Ideally the house needs to have a least one nest box for every 3 birds and these need to be off the ground and also in the darkest area of your home. Your home must have ample ventilation: without it after that condensation will develop every evening, also in the chilliest of climate. Realize, ventilation works on the concept of warm air leaving via a high gap attracting cooler air in from a lower space - it's not a set of holes on contrary walls of your house as well as at the exact same degree, this is exactly what's known as a draught. If you have a house with a run connected then the points above are still true, yet you should additionally consider the run dimension. The EU optimum lawful stocking density for a free range bird is (and also let's encounter it, among the motivations for keeping some hens in your home is potentially enhanced or better well-being) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's optimal one bird per 4m squared. Take a close check out some of the bargain residences - it could well be the house has the ideal perches, proper ventilation as well as enough nest boxes for a practical variety of birds, but will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized item of ground to spend the day on? Therefore as the stating goes, "you get exactly what you pay for". You might think you've grabbed a deal, however you and also your flock might rue the day you did. Purchase the ideal house and it will last for a couple of years, otherwise longer offered the correct treatment. Eventually your chicken and also your poultry keeping encounter will be much the far better for it.
