Building a Chicken Coop

Well, we are finally done building our chicken coop for the most part. Britton woke up early on Saturday and put the shingles on the top and built the nesting boxes. He had the already done, but with the crazy rainy/snowy weather we had put off moving it to the backyard until today.

We used the lawnmower as a dolly to transport it from the garage to our backyard because I am a wuss and couldn’t carry it. Then we needed to paint the plywood white to help protect it from the elements including the sprinkler system. So we went for a bike ride down to Ace and picked up a little can of exterior paint. We sat down to paint and were done in about 15 minutes. When I saw the white blank canvas, I decided to make it a cuter chicken coop with a custom paint job. Voila! Not bad for a day’s work. What do you think? We can’t wait till the baby chicks are old enough to live there with the Leghorn.

Usually these mass produced versions are constructed of fast grown wood - come the first decline of rain they swell, leaving you either barricading a door that won't close, or ripping the door furnishings off in a vain attempt to launch the squawking occupants. The very first cozy day means the lumber dries out and splits, the really felt roofing bubbles and also boils, as well as come nightfall the chickens choose not to enter. This is not because of their dissatisfaction at the decrease of their once appealing commercial property however due to the fact that the hovel is currently a haven for, as well as probably crawling with, the poultry keeper's nemesis, red mite. Add that it stated on the blurb that it would certainly fit 4 huge hens when that stocking thickness was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and also what are you entrusted? A couple of joints as well as some kindling. A good coop for thee to 4 birds need to cost you in the region of ₤ 300 though this could depend upon whether you elect for a totally free standing house or one with a run connected. Thinking you are ranging your birds in a large space and the pop hole doorway allows sufficient for the breed you keep, then the main demands of housing boil down to three factors which will specify the variety of birds your house will hold; perches, nest boxes and ventilation. The majority of breeds of chicken will certainly perch when they go to roost during the night, this perch must ideally be 5-8cm vast with smoothed off edges so the foot sits pleasantly on it. The perch must be above the nest box entry as chickens will certainly likewise normally try to find the highest point to perch. A perch less than that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is by the way when they generate the most poo) bring about stained eggs the following day. They should not nonetheless be so high off the flooring of your home that leg injuries might happen when the bird gets down in the early morning. Chickens require concerning 20cm of perch each (in tiny types this is certainly less), plus if more than one perch is set up in the house they need to be greater than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their neighbors yet are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird ahead. Preferably the house needs to have a the very least one nest box for every single three birds and these must be off the ground and also in the darkest location of the house. The house must have appropriate air flow: without it then condensation will certainly accumulate every night, even in the coldest of weather condition. Realize, air flow works on the concept of warm air leaving via a high gap attracting cooler air in from a reduced gap - it's not a collection of holes on opposite wall surfaces of your house and at the very same degree, this is just what's known as a draught. If you have a house with a run affixed after that the points above are still real, however you need to also take into consideration the run size. The EU maximum legal stocking thickness for a cost-free array bird is (and also allow's face it, among the inspirations for maintaining some chickens at home is possibly improved or far better well-being) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's optimal one bird per 4m settled. Take a close consider several of the deal homes - it could well be your house has the right perches, appropriate ventilation as well as adequate nest boxes for an affordable variety of birds, but will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized piece of ground to invest the day on? Therefore as the claiming goes, "you get what you spend for". You might assume you've grabbed a deal, yet you as well as your flock could rue the day you did. Purchase the ideal house and also it will last for a couple of years, otherwise longer provided the appropriate treatment. In the end your fowl and your fowl maintaining experience will certainly be considerably the far better for it.
