Raising Cornish Cross Chickens – Week 4

Our 10 Cornish Cross meat chickens are now a month old…..one more month to go!

You can read why we chose this breed and see pictures of their growth on these posts:  – –

They are outside full time now and love to munch on the grass!

They are still much more active than I expected.  I have read that all they do is stand or lay down at the feeders and eat all day.  Ours are not like that at all, maybe it’s because they have room to run and fresh grass to eat, or maybe they just haven’t got to that point yet?

They are ugly little buggers and not very bright!  I weighed one a couple days ago and it was almost 2 pounds.  They are going through the feed pretty quickly now, I think it’s going to cost more than I originally expected to feed them.  But I also expected to loose a couple and so far no casualties.  The five that my mom took to her house are also doing very well.  Thanks for following along on our meat chicken journey.

Pros of buying baby chicks in Spruce Michigan * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Spruce, Michigan Baby chicks are really adorable and difficult to stand up to, yet it's finest to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare initially by compiling not just the appropriate products, however likewise the correct knowledge to care for them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you merely should supply them with the following: A clean and also cozy habitat Lots of food and also water Interest and also love Environment Your environment can be a straightforward box, fish tank, pet cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without any loose strings!) to start, as well as after a few weeks use straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You additionally require something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food and also a family pet bird water dispenser from a pet store. Also, as the chicks grow older you could introduce a perch into the environment to obtain them trained on setting down. Warmth To maintain your chicks heat you have to offer them with a warmth resource. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb likewise function very well (my referral). Chicks require this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could take up to 2 months). The newly hatched out need a temperature between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and also weekly this can be minimized by roughly 5 levels approximately. The warmth source ought to be on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are hiding in the opposite edge of your warmth light, you have to reduce the temperature. If they are smothering each various other under the heat (not merely cuddling), you should include some warmth. Housekeeping Cleanliness is essential as well as it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bedding frequently and consistently offer tidy food and also water Food and also water. Chicks expand very fast which requires a lot of tidy food and water. Give sufficient in any way times and also examine often to prevent thirsty as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, after that switch to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, then to a somewhat lower protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others will not use up that task up until they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, present a tray of sand or filth for them to wash in. Interest and love There are a couple of advantages to hanging out with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly probably bond with you and not escape as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also see their behavior, you could capture illness or other troubles previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or other unhealthy indications. Be sure to also look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could lead to matted plumes and blocked cloaca. Last but not least, it is necessary to look out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick obtaining picked on. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathered and its time for them to leave the security of your residence and also move outside into a coop.
