A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in New Haven Michigan * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in New Haven, Michigan Baby chicks are extremely cute as well as challenging to stand up to, however it's finest to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by gathering not only the appropriate materials, however also the correct knowledge to care for them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably simple, you merely should provide them with the following: A clean and also warm and comfortable habitat Plenty of food and water Interest and also love Habitat Your habitat could be a simple box, fish tank, feline service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks make use of straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid using only newspaper or various other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You likewise require something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food and also an animal bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Additionally, as the chicks age you can present a perch right into the habitat to get them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you need to provide them with a warmth source. This can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb likewise function effectively (my referral). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which could occupy to two months). The newly hatched require a temperature in between 90 and also 100 degrees, as well as weekly this could be reduced by about 5 degrees or so. The warmth resource should be on just one side of the cage to allow chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the other corner of your warmth light, you need to minimize the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not just curling up), you need to include some warmth. Home cleaning Cleanliness is crucial as well as it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Make certain to transform the bed linens frequently as well as always give tidy food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks expand quite quickly which calls for lots of tidy food as well as water. Offer enough in any way times and check frequently to prevent dehydrated as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to adult chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, then to a somewhat reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks want to get a running start on taking dirt baths, while others will not occupy that task till they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to bathe in. Focus as well as love There are a few benefits to hanging out with your chicks. First off, they will certainly probably bond with you and also not run away as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also enjoy their behavior, you could capture health problem or various other problems previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or various other harmful indicators. Make sure to additionally look at their poop, as diarrhea can result in matted feathers as well as blocked cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to watch out for social issues, such as the littlest chick obtaining picked on. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are currently fully feathered as well as its time for them to leave the security of your residence as well as relocate outside into a coop.
