A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Falmouth Michigan * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Falmouth, Michigan Baby chicks are quite adorable as well as tough to resist, yet it's finest to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by collecting not only the proper products, yet additionally the proper expertise to care for them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably simple, you merely should supply them with the following: A tidy as well as warm and comfortable habitat Lots of food and water Interest and love Habitat Your environment could be a basic box, aquarium, pet cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (with no loosened strings!) to begin, and after a couple of weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid making use of only paper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You additionally require something to provide food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water dish from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food and also a pet dog bird water dispenser from an animal store. Likewise, as the chicks get older you can present a perch into the environment to obtain them trained on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you need to provide them with a warmth resource. This can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb additionally function effectively (my referral). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can use up to two months). The recently hatched out require a temperature in between 90 and also 100 degrees, and every week this could be reduced by roughly 5 degrees or so. The heat source should get on merely one side of the cage to allow chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are concealing in the opposite corner of your warmth light, you need to decrease the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not simply snuggling), you need to put some warmth. House cleaning Sanitation is key as well as it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Make certain to transform the bed linens commonly and also consistently give clean food as well as water Food and water. Chicks grow extremely fast which requires plenty of clean food as well as water. Give enough in any way times and also inspect often to prevent dehydrated and hungry chicks. Chick food is different compared to adult chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, after that switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and after that to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks prefer to get a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others won't use up that task up until they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dust for them to wash in. Attention and also love There are a couple of benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. To start with, they will most likely bond with you and not flee as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as view their actions, you could catch disease or various other problems earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or other unhealthy signs. Make certain to likewise look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could lead to matted plumes and also obstructed cloaca. Lastly, it is important to watch out for social concerns, such as the tiniest chick getting picked on. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now completely feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home as well as relocate outside into a coop. Check out our area on chicken coops to get more information about coops and also appropriate coop habitats.
