A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

LATypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Baskin Louisiana * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Cons of buying baby chicks in Baskin Louisiana * Order early to get the best selection. Certain breeds sell out fast, sometimes as early as 6 months in advance of shipping! Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Baskin Louisiana is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Baskin, Louisiana Baby chicks are really charming as well as challenging to stand up to, however it's ideal to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare initially by compiling not just the proper products, yet likewise the correct understanding to look after them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably simple, you merely need to supply them with the following: A clean and warm environment Lots of food and water Interest and also love Habitat Your habitat could be an easy box, aquarium, feline carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (with no loose strings!) to start, as well as after a couple of weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid using only paper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could expand malformed. You additionally need something to serve up food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food and a pet bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks get older you could introduce a perch into the environment to get them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you should give them with a heat source. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also function effectively (my recommendation). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can take up to 2 months). The recently hatched require a temperature level in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and also weekly this can be lowered by around 5 levels approximately. The warmth resource should get on simply one side of the cage to allow chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are hiding in the contrary corner of your heat lamp, you should lower the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not merely cuddling), you have to put some warmth. House cleaning Sanitation is essential and it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to change the bed linen usually and also always give clean food and water Food and water. Chicks grow really quick which calls for lots of tidy food and water. Provide sufficient whatsoever times as well as check often to avoid dehydrated as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, as well as it comes in both medicated as well as non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and then to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a running start on taking dirt baths, while others will not take up that task until they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or filth for them to shower in. Focus and also love There are a couple of benefits to hanging out with your chicks. First of all, they will more than likely bond with you and also not flee as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and see their habits, you can catch illness or other problems previously. Watch out for wheezing, hopping, or other unhealthy signs. Make certain to also check out their poop, as looseness of the bowels can bring about matted plumes and also clogged cloaca. Finally, it is necessary to watch out for social problems, such as the smallest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are now fully feathered and its time for them to leave the security of your house and also move outside right into a cage. Check out our part on chicken cages to learn more regarding coops and also proper cage habitats.
