On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Amelia Louisiana * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Amelia, Louisiana Baby chicks are extremely adorable and also challenging to stand up to, however it's best to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare initially by collecting not only the appropriate materials, however additionally the correct knowledge to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably easy, you just have to provide them with the following: A tidy as well as warm and comfortable environment Lots of food and also water Focus as well as love Environment Your habitat can be a basic box, aquarium, cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without any loose strings!) to start, and also after a couple of weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid making use of only newspaper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You likewise need something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food as well as a family pet bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Additionally, as the chicks get older you could introduce a perch into the environment to obtain them educated on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks warm you have to offer them with a warmth source. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb also function extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could occupy to 2 months). The recently hatched require a temperature in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and also each week this could be reduced by about 5 degrees or so. The heat resource must be on simply one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are concealing in the other corner of your heat lamp, you have to lower the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not merely curling up), you need to add some heat. Home cleaning Cleanliness is vital and also it maintains your chicks healthy. Make sure to change the bedding usually and always provide tidy food and water Food as well as water. Chicks expand very fast which needs plenty of clean food and water. Give sufficient at all times and inspect usually to prevent dehydrated and also starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, and it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first two months, then switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks like to obtain a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others will not take up that activity until they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Attention and love There are a few benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly most likely bond with you as well as not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily as well as view their habits, you could capture disease or other problems previously. Watch out for wheezing, hopping, or various other unhealthy indicators. Make certain to likewise look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could lead to matted feathers and also obstructed cloaca. Last but not least, it is very important to look out for social issues, such as the smallest chick getting badgered. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently completely feathered and also its time for them to leave the safety of your home and move outside into a coop. Check out our area on chicken cages to read more about coops as well as appropriate cage environments.
