New chickens & prepping for goats!

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my . Thanks for visiting!

Spring has sprung around here.

Actually, it’s 93 degrees outside today, so it feels more like summer.

We’ve been fixing up the place, making the chicken area bigger to welcome our new chickens as well as…..GOATS!

Yes, we’ll be getting some goats next week!

So my husband put in a new fence to contain them and we remodeled the kids old play structure to be a shelter and climbing structure for the goats to play on. There will be four. We’re just about ready to bring them over.

Our new hens came from the same ranch nearby, were we are buying the goats from. We’ve been getting lots of eggs so far .

The family is moving out of state, so we’ll be taking over some of their goats and several of their chickens. This couple has a lot to teach about raising goats! I’ll be posting some of their wise advice soon.

I’m planning on breeding the two girl goats, and then keeping them as dairy milk goats. Can you picture me milking my goats?

Me neither, but I’ll try!

the new chickens are so pretty and healthy. I hope they are happy here. So far, they are getting along with the old gals that were here already. The rooster is pretty thrilled…..

Happy spring!

COTypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Ward Colorado * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Cons of buying baby chicks in Ward Colorado * Order early to get the best selection. Certain breeds sell out fast, sometimes as early as 6 months in advance of shipping! If you are wanting a certain breed it's best to order your chicks in the fall before their orders sell out.

Baby Chickens How To Care For Them in Ward, Colorado

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Ward Colorado is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Ward, Colorado Baby chicks are quite charming and also hard to withstand, but it's best to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by collecting not only the right products, but also the proper knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly basic, you merely should give them with the following: A clean as well as warm habitat Lots of food and water Attention as well as love Environment Your habitat can be a simple box, aquarium, pet cat carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without any loose strings!) to start, and after a couple of weeks make use of straw over paper. Note: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or various other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You likewise require something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed store, or a pickle container cover for food and also a pet bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Additionally, as the chicks grow older you could present a perch right into the environment to obtain them educated on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks warm you need to supply them with a heat source. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb also work effectively (my suggestion). Chicks need this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can occupy to 2 months). The recently hatched out need a temperature between 90 and also 100 degrees, and weekly this can be minimized by around 5 degrees approximately. The warmth source need to be on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are hiding in the opposite corner of your warmth light, you need to minimize the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not merely curling up), you have to include some heat. House cleaning Sanitation is vital and it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Make certain to alter the bedding usually and consistently supply clean food and water Food as well as water. Chicks grow quite quick which calls for lots of clean food and water. Give enough in any way times and examine commonly to stop parched and also hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to adult chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that change to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and then to a slightly lower healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks like to get a head start on taking dust baths, while others will not occupy that task up until they are older. If you have the room in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Interest and love There are a few benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. Firstly, they will most likely bond with you and also not run away as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also view their habits, you can catch ailment or various other troubles earlier. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or various other undesirable indicators. Be sure to likewise take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could bring about matted feathers and obstructed cloaca. Lastly, it is very important to watch out for social problems, such as the littlest chick getting picked on. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently totally feathered as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your residence and move outside into a cage. Look into our section on chicken coops to find out more regarding coops and also proper coop environments.
