Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Monterey Park, California Baby chicks are quite cute and also challenging to stand up to, however it's best to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by gathering not just the proper materials, yet also the correct knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you just need to offer them with the following: A clean and also cozy environment Plenty of food and also water Focus as well as love Habitat Your environment could be an easy box, fish tank, feline provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (with no loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a few weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing just newspaper or other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You likewise require something to dish out food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food as well as an animal bird water dispenser from an animal store. Additionally, as the chicks get older you could introduce a perch into the habitat to obtain them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you need to provide them with a warmth resource. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb additionally function extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could use up to 2 months). The freshly hatched require a temperature between 90 and 100 levels, as well as each week this can be lowered by approximately 5 levels approximately. The heat resource need to be on simply one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the contrary corner of your heat light, you need to reduce the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the warmth (not simply snuggling), you should add some warmth. Housekeeping Tidiness is crucial as well as it keeps your chicks healthy. Be sure to change the bed linens typically and also consistently supply tidy food and also water Food and also water. Chicks expand extremely fast which requires lots of tidy food and water. Provide enough in any way times as well as check usually to stop thirsty and starving chicks. Chick food is various than adult chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, then switch to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for another 2 months, and then to a slightly reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking filth baths, while others won't use up that activity till they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Attention and love There are a couple of advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly probably bond with you and also not flee as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as watch their habits, you can capture disease or various other issues earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or other unhealthy indicators. Be sure to likewise look at their poop, as diarrhea could cause matted plumes and also obstructed cloaca. Finally, it is necessary to watch out for social concerns, such as the smallest chick getting badgered. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently completely feathered and its time for them to leave the safety of your home and also move outside right into a coop. Have a look at our part on chicken coops to get more information about coops and correct coop environments.
