On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Akiak Alaska * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Akiak Alaska is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Akiak, Alaska Baby chicks are extremely cute as well as challenging to withstand, however it's ideal to prepare for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare first by collecting not only the appropriate products, but likewise the proper knowledge to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you just need to supply them with the following: A tidy and also cozy habitat Plenty of food and water Interest and also love Environment Your habitat can be an easy box, fish tank, cat carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (with no loose strings!) to begin, and after a few weeks utilize straw over paper. Note: Avoid utilizing only newspaper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could expand malformed. You likewise require something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food and also a pet dog bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Additionally, as the chicks get older you could present a perch right into the environment to obtain them educated on setting down. Heat To keep your chicks heat you should offer them with a warmth resource. This could be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb additionally function effectively (my suggestion). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which can take up to 2 months). The newly hatched out need a temperature level in between 90 and 100 levels, and weekly this can be minimized by about 5 levels approximately. The heat source ought to get on just one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are concealing in the other corner of your heat light, you should lower the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not just snuggling), you should include some warmth. House cleaning Sanitation is crucial as well as it keeps your chicks healthy. Make sure to transform the bed linens typically as well as consistently supply clean food as well as water Food and water. Chicks grow really quickly which needs a lot of clean food and water. Supply sufficient at all times as well as inspect commonly to avoid parched as well as starving chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, and it comes in both medicated and non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the first two months, after that switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks prefer to get a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't take up that activity until they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Focus and also love There are a couple of advantages to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will probably bond with you and also not flee as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also view their behavior, you can catch illness or other problems earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or various other undesirable indications. Be sure to additionally take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can bring about matted feathers as well as clogged cloaca. Last but not least, it is necessary to look out for social problems, such as the littlest chick getting picked on. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now totally feathery and its time for them to leave the security of your home and relocate outside into a cage. Take a look at our part on chicken cages for more information about coops as well as correct coop habitats.
