A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Hartford Wisconsin * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Hartford, Wisconsin Baby chicks are very adorable and challenging to resist, however it's finest to prepare for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare initially by compiling not just the correct materials, but likewise the correct expertise to care for them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably basic, you just need to give them with the following: A clean as well as warm environment Plenty of food and also water Focus as well as love Habitat Your habitat can be a simple box, aquarium, cat carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without loose strings!) to begin, and also after a few weeks use straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of just newspaper or other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You additionally need something to dish out food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food as well as a pet dog bird water dispenser from a family pet store. Additionally, as the chicks get older you could introduce a perch right into the habitat to obtain them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you need to give them with a heat source. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also function extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which could occupy to 2 months). The newly hatched need a temperature level between 90 and 100 degrees, and also each week this could be reduced by roughly 5 degrees approximately. The heat source ought to be on just one side of the cage to enable chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermometer- if they are concealing in the contrary edge of your warmth lamp, you have to minimize the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the warmth (not merely cuddling), you should include some heat. Home cleaning Tidiness is key and also it keeps your chicks healthy. Be sure to transform the bed linen often and constantly give tidy food and water Food and water. Chicks grow quite fast which requires lots of tidy food as well as water. Supply enough at all times and also check often to stop dehydrated and hungry chicks. Chick food is various compared to adult chicken food, and it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, then switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, then to a slightly lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others won't take up that task until they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Interest as well as love There are a couple of benefits to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will certainly most likely bond with you as well as not escape as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as see their actions, you can catch health problem or other problems earlier. Watch out for wheezing, hopping, or other unhealthy indications. Be sure to also check out their poop, as diarrhea can bring about matted feathers and also blocked cloaca. Finally, it is necessary to look out for social concerns, such as the smallest chick getting picked on. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathered and also its time for them to leave the security of your residence and move outside into a coop. Check out our section on chicken cages for more information concerning coops and appropriate cage environments.
