Building a Chicken Coop

Hey everyone, it’s been awhile since I posted anything about our life with chickens. As you may know about 6 weeks ago our family decided to adopt some baby chicks so we could get fresh organic eggs. I think now that we have chickens it’s more of having them as pets. =) I never realized how sweet they could be and the different personalities they could carry.  A lot has gone on since we have gotten them, both sad and happy stories but those will come in another post. Today I’m sharing with you our day when we built our chicken coop.

I’m not very creative when it comes to pulling something out of my head as far as building and neither is my hubby. If he had a piece of paper with how to build and what you need for materials we would be happy as a clam. We knew we had to build a coop for the chickens but wasn’t sure which way to go about it. We live in the city and can only have hens so our space is limited. None of the stores around here carried any chicken coops for sale so we browsed ebay and found a cute chicken coop that we ended up purchasing.

It came in multiple pieces and with some pretty crappy instructions actually. A couple of pieces were broken or cracked which kind of sucked for the amount we paid for it. Luckily the ebay seller reimbursed us for some of the cost.

We were able to put it together easily in about 4 hours given that we had to make modifications to it and fix what arrived broken.

I think it looks really cute and the chickens enjoy it.

Thanks for stopping by and be on the look out for our next chicken post, “Building a Chicken Run.”

Usually these standardized models are built of fast grown up timber - come the very first decline of rainfall they swell, leaving you either blockading a door that won't shut, or ripping the door furniture off in a vain effort to release the squawking occupants. The very first warm day means the hardwood dries out and also splits, the really felt roofing system bubbles and also boils, as well as come nightfall the chickens choose not to go in. This is not as a result of their frustration at the decline of their as soon as eye-catching home yet because the hovel is currently a place for, as well as possibly crawling with, the fowl caretaker's nemesis, red mite. Add that it stated on the blurb that it would certainly fit 4 huge chickens when that stocking density was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, and exactly what are you entrusted? A couple of hinges and also some kindling. A good coop for thee to 4 birds should cost you around ₤ 300 though this can rely on whether you elect for a cost-free standing house or one with a run connected. Assuming you are varying your birds in a huge area and the pop opening doorway is big enough for the breed you keep, after that the primary demands of housing come down to 3 factors which will specify the variety of birds your house will hold; perches, nest boxes as well as ventilation. Most breeds of chicken will perch when they go to roost at night, this perch needs to ideally be 5-8cm broad with smoothed off edges so the foot sits easily on it. The perch ought to be above the nest box entrance as chickens will certainly additionally naturally try to find the highest point to perch. A perch lower than that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is incidentally when they produce the most poo) bring about stained eggs the list below day. They should not however be so high off the flooring of your house that leg injuries could possibly happen when the bird gets down in the early morning. Chickens require concerning 20cm of perch each (in little types this is obviously less), plus if more than one perch is installed in your home they ought to be greater than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their neighbors but are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Ideally the house should have a the very least one nest box for each 3 birds and these should be off the ground and in the darkest area of your home. Your house must have sufficient air flow: without it after that condensation will develop every night, also in the chilliest of weather condition. Know, air flow works with the principle of warm and comfortable air leaving with a high void drawing cooler air in from a reduced void - it's not a set of openings on opposite walls of your house and also at the same level, this is just what's called a draft. If you have a house with a run affixed after that the points above are still real, but you need to also take into consideration the run dimension. The EU optimum lawful stocking thickness for a complimentary range bird is (as well as allow's face it, among the motivations for maintaining some chickens in the house is potentially improved or much better welfare) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's optimal one bird each 4m squared. Take a close consider a few of the bargain homes - it could well be your home has the ideal perches, correct air flow as well as enough nest boxes for a practical variety of birds, yet will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized piece of ground to spend the day on? Therefore as the claiming goes, "you get exactly what you spend for". You may believe you've got a bargain, but you and your flock could possibly rue the day you did. Acquisition the right house and also it will certainly last for a few decades, otherwise longer provided the right treatment. Eventually your poultry and your chicken maintaining encounter will be considerably the much better for it.
