Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Troy West Virginia * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Troy West Virginia is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Troy, West Virginia Baby chicks are quite adorable and difficult to stand up to, however it's finest to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by collecting not only the appropriate materials, but also the proper understanding to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly simple, you just have to supply them with the following: A tidy and warm and comfortable habitat A lot of food as well as water Focus and also love Environment Your habitat can be an easy box, fish tank, cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without loosened strings!) to start, and after a few weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing just paper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could expand malformed. You also need something to dish out food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food and also a family pet bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Additionally, as the chicks get older you could introduce a perch right into the habitat to obtain them educated on setting down. Heat To keep your chicks heat you have to give them with a heat resource. This can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb additionally function very well (my referral). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is changed with plumes (which could occupy to two months). The freshly hatched require a temperature level between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and also each week this can be reduced by approximately 5 levels or so. The warmth resource should be on just one side of the cage to allow chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your best thermometer- if they are hiding in the opposite corner of your heat light, you need to minimize the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not just snuggling), you need to include some heat. Housekeeping Sanitation is key and it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to transform the bed linen usually as well as consistently supply tidy food and water Food and also water. Chicks grow extremely quickly which requires lots of clean food and water. Supply sufficient in any way times and also check frequently to avoid dehydrated and also hungry chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the very first two months, after that change to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, and after that to a slightly lower healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks like to obtain a head start on taking filth baths, while others will not take up that task till they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Attention as well as love There are a couple of benefits to hanging out with your chicks. To start with, they will probably bond with you and also not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also watch their habits, you can catch disease or various other problems previously. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or other unhealthy indicators. Make sure to likewise take a look at their poop, as diarrhea could lead to matted plumes and also clogged up cloaca. Finally, it is important to look out for social issues, such as the tiniest chick obtaining badgered. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently totally feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and also move outside right into a coop. Check out our section on chicken coops to learn more about cages and proper coop environments.
