Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Sod West Virginia * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Sod West Virginia is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Sod, West Virginia Baby chicks are extremely adorable and tough to withstand, however it's ideal to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by collecting not just the right materials, however also the appropriate expertise to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is fairly straightforward, you simply have to give them with the following: A clean and warm habitat Plenty of food and also water Attention and also love Habitat Your environment can be a simple box, aquarium, pet cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (with no loose strings!) to begin, and after a few weeks make use of straw over paper. Note: Avoid using only newspaper or other slipper surface areas-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You also need something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle container lid for food and a pet dog bird water dispenser from a pet dog store. Also, as the chicks age you could introduce a perch into the habitat to obtain them educated on setting down. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you should provide them with a heat source. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb additionally function effectively (my suggestion). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could occupy to 2 months). The newly hatched need a temperature in between 90 and also 100 degrees, as well as every week this can be decreased by around 5 degrees or so. The warmth source must be on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are concealing in the other edge of your warmth lamp, you need to decrease the temperature level. If they are smothering each various other under the heat (not simply curling up), you need to put some heat. Home cleaning Tidiness is crucial and it maintains your chicks healthy. Make sure to change the bed linens often as well as constantly give tidy food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks grow extremely quickly which needs lots of tidy food and water. Offer enough in any way times as well as examine usually to avoid parched as well as hungry chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the very first two months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and then to a slightly reduced healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others will not use up that activity up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Interest as well as love There are a few advantages to hanging out with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly more than likely bond with you and also not run away as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and view their behavior, you could capture disease or other issues earlier. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or other harmful indicators. Be sure to also look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could lead to matted plumes and obstructed cloaca. Finally, it is important to keep an eye out for social issues, such as the littlest chick obtaining badgered. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are currently totally feathered and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your house and also relocate outside into a cage. Check out our part on chicken coops to find out more about cages and also correct cage habitats.
