Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Skelton, West Virginia Baby chicks are quite charming and difficult to resist, however it's best to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not just the correct products, but additionally the correct knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you just should supply them with the following: A tidy as well as warm and comfortable environment Lots of food as well as water Interest and also love Habitat Your habitat could be a basic box, aquarium, cat carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also coverings (without any loosened strings!) to start, as well as after a few weeks make use of straw over paper. Note: Avoid making use of just paper or other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You likewise need something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food and a pet bird water dispenser from a pet store. Likewise, as the chicks get older you can present a perch right into the environment to obtain them educated on perching. Heat To maintain your chicks heat you need to provide them with a heat resource. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style lamp from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb also function extremely well (my referral). Chicks need this heat 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could occupy to two months). The freshly hatched out require a temperature level in between 90 as well as 100 degrees, as well as every week this could be decreased by around 5 levels approximately. The warmth source ought to be on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermometer- if they are hiding in the contrary corner of your warmth lamp, you should lower the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not merely cuddling), you have to put some warmth. House cleaning Sanitation is crucial and also it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bedding often and also consistently give tidy food as well as water Food and also water. Chicks expand really fast which requires lots of tidy food and also water. Offer enough at all times and also examine usually to prevent parched as well as starving chicks. Chick food is different than grown-up chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, then change to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, then to a somewhat lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks want to obtain a running start on taking dirt baths, while others will not take up that task up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick unit, present a tray of sand or dust for them to wash in. Interest as well as love There are a couple of benefits to hanging out with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly more than likely bond with you and not run away as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as enjoy their actions, you could catch ailment or other troubles previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, hopping, or other harmful indicators. Make certain to also take a look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can result in matted feathers as well as obstructed cloaca. Finally, it is essential to look out for social problems, such as the littlest chick obtaining picked on. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently completely feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and relocate outside right into a coop. Take a look at our part on chicken coops to read more about coops and also correct cage environments.
