A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Mineral Wells, West Virginia Baby chicks are really adorable and also difficult to resist, however it's ideal to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by compiling not only the proper products, but likewise the correct knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is relatively easy, you simply should supply them with the following: A clean and warm environment Lots of food as well as water Focus as well as love Environment Your habitat can be a simple box, fish tank, feline service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (without any loose strings!) to begin, as well as after a few weeks make use of straw over paper. Note: Avoid making use of only paper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You also require something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food as well as an animal bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Likewise, as the chicks age you could present a perch into the environment to get them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks heat you need to supply them with a heat resource. This can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb also work very well (my referral). Chicks require this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can use up to 2 months). The newly hatched out require a temperature in between 90 and 100 levels, as well as each week this could be reduced by approximately 5 levels approximately. The heat resource need to get on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermostat- if they are hiding in the contrary edge of your heat lamp, you need to lower the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the warmth (not just snuggling), you need to include some warmth. Home cleaning Cleanliness is vital and it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to change the bed linen typically and also consistently supply clean food and also water Food and water. Chicks expand extremely quick which needs plenty of clean food and water. Supply sufficient at all times as well as check often to stop parched and also hungry chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated and non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first two months, then change to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, then to a slightly lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Dirt Some chicks want to get a head start on taking dust baths, while others won't use up that activity till they are older. If you have the space in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to shower in. Focus and also love There are a few benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly more than likely bond with you and not escape as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as view their actions, you could catch health problem or various other troubles previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or other harmful indications. Make sure to additionally check out their poop, as looseness of the bowels can cause matted feathers as well as obstructed cloaca. Lastly, it is essential to watch out for social problems, such as the tiniest chick obtaining badgered. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are now fully feathered as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your residence as well as move outside right into a coop. Take a look at our area on chicken cages for more information concerning coops as well as appropriate cage environments.
