On Saturday, we butchered 35 meat chickens in 3 1/2  hours!! It was a lot of fun…but a little cold.    Daddy took care of the heads, wings and legs. Jessie, Lyssa and Annie skinned them and Suzanna and Cassie gutted them. At the end we all cut up the pieces and bagged them. Bekah and Charissa were our photographers!!    Here are a few pictures…

When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Matoaka, West Virginia Baby chicks are extremely adorable and hard to resist, but it's ideal to prepare for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare initially by collecting not just the right products, yet also the correct understanding to care for them. Raising baby chicks is relatively straightforward, you just need to offer them with the following: A tidy and warm and comfortable environment Lots of food as well as water Attention and also love Habitat Your habitat could be a simple box, aquarium, pet cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (with no loosened strings!) to start, and after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid utilizing just newspaper or other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow misshapen. You also require something to dish out food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food as well as a pet dog bird water dispenser from a family pet shop. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you could present a perch right into the environment to obtain them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks heat you should offer them with a warmth source. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb additionally work very well (my referral). Chicks need this warmth 24/7 up until their downy fluff is changed with feathers (which can occupy to 2 months). The newly hatched need a temperature between 90 as well as 100 degrees, and also each week this could be minimized by approximately 5 levels approximately. The warmth resource should be on simply one side of the cage to permit chicks an array of temperatures. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are hiding in the opposite corner of your heat lamp, you should minimize the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not merely cuddling), you have to add some heat. House cleaning Sanitation is vital and also it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to alter the bedding typically and consistently provide tidy food as well as water Food and water. Chicks grow quite quickly which requires plenty of clean food and also water. Offer enough in any way times as well as inspect often to avoid thirsty and also starving chicks. Chick food is different compared to grown-up chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the first two months, then change to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, then to a slightly reduced protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks like to obtain a head start on taking dirt baths, while others will not take up that activity up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to shower in. Focus as well as love There are a few benefits to hanging out with your chicks. To start with, they will probably bond with you and not run away as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and view their habits, you could capture ailment or other troubles earlier. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or other harmful indicators. Be sure to additionally look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels can cause matted feathers as well as stopped up cloaca. Last but not least, it is important to look out for social concerns, such as the smallest chick getting badgered. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are now totally feathery and its time for them to leave the safety of your house as well as move outside right into a cage. Look into our area on chicken coops to get more information regarding coops as well as appropriate cage environments.
