Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Bakerton, West Virginia Baby chicks are really charming and hard to resist, but it's ideal to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare initially by compiling not just the correct products, but additionally the proper knowledge to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you merely need to offer them with the following: A tidy as well as warm and comfortable environment Lots of food and also water Attention and love Environment Your habitat can be a straightforward box, fish tank, cat carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (with no loosened strings!) to start, as well as after a couple of weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid making use of just paper or other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You likewise need something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food as well as a pet dog bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks grow older you could present a perch into the environment to get them educated on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks warm you should offer them with a heat resource. This can be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise function very well (my recommendation). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could use up to 2 months). The freshly hatched need a temperature between 90 as well as 100 degrees, as well as each week this could be reduced by around 5 levels approximately. The heat resource need to get on just one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your best thermometer- if they are concealing in the opposite edge of your heat lamp, you need to decrease the temperature level. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not merely curling up), you have to put some warmth. Housekeeping Tidiness is essential as well as it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bedding typically and also always supply clean food as well as water Food and water. Chicks expand quite quick which calls for plenty of clean food as well as water. Supply enough whatsoever times and also inspect commonly to avoid parched and also hungry chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the very first 2 months, then switch to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, then to a slightly lower healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others won't occupy that activity up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick unit, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to bathe in. Focus and love There are a couple of benefits to hanging out with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly probably bond with you and not escape as adults. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also enjoy their behavior, you can catch health problem or various other troubles earlier. Watch out for wheezing, limping, or various other harmful signs. Make certain to additionally look at their poop, as diarrhea could bring about matted plumes and also clogged cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to watch out for social issues, such as the littlest chick obtaining teased. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are now totally feathery as well as its time for them to leave the safety and security of your home and also move outside into a cage.
