We’ve raised four different batches of chicks and this is the year I’ve made an official chick brooder box.  I used the and I was very pleased so I figured I would share my own results.

I’ll give you a basic idea of what I did but please go look at the tutorial because it has very good step by step directions and I want to make sure I give credit where it belongs.  : )

First I cut a rectangle in the top of my plastic tub.  (I used a pocket knife.)  Then I measured my strips of wood and cut them down to the right size.

Next I cut a piece of chicken wire I had left over from the chicken yard.  (I was out of hardware cloth or I would have used it.  My chicks stay indoors so the chicken wire is more to keep them from flying out then as protection from predators).

Then I drilled holes in the ends of my wood and the plastic tub for the bolts to go through.

I threaded the bolts with the chicken wire between the wood and the tub lid and screwed them on with a nut and washer.

Here are some close up pictures of the front and back of the brooder lid:

WATypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Mercer Island Washington * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Cons of buying baby chicks in Mercer Island Washington * Order early to get the best selection. Certain breeds sell out fast, sometimes as early as 6 months in advance of shipping! If you are wanting a certain breed it's best to order your chicks in the fall before their orders sell out.

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Mercer Island Washington is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Mercer Island, Washington Baby chicks are really charming and tough to stand up to, yet it's ideal to plan for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by collecting not only the proper materials, yet likewise the proper knowledge to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is relatively straightforward, you simply need to give them with the following: A tidy and warm and comfortable environment Lots of food and also water Attention and love Environment Your habitat can be a straightforward box, fish tank, cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and coverings (without loose strings!) to start, as well as after a few weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid making use of only newspaper or various other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs can grow malformed. You additionally need something to provide food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food and a family pet bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Likewise, as the chicks get older you can introduce a perch right into the habitat to obtain them educated on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks warm you have to offer them with a heat source. This can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from a hardware shop, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise work very well (my suggestion). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could take up to two months). The recently hatched require a temperature level between 90 and 100 degrees, and also weekly this could be lowered by around 5 levels approximately. The heat resource ought to be on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your finest thermometer- if they are concealing in the opposite edge of your heat lamp, you should decrease the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the heat (not simply curling up), you should include some heat. Housekeeping Cleanliness is key and also it maintains your chicks healthy. Make certain to transform the bedding usually and also consistently offer tidy food and also water Food and also water. Chicks grow really fast which needs lots of tidy food and water. Supply sufficient in any way times and also check often to avoid parched and starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, as well as it comes in both medicated as well as non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for an additional 2 months, then to a slightly reduced healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to obtain a head start on taking filth bathrooms, while others won't occupy that task up until they are older. If you have the space in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to shower in. Interest and also love There are a few benefits to spending quality time with your chicks. First of all, they will most likely bond with you and not flee as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and watch their actions, you can capture ailment or various other issues earlier. Keep an eye out for wheezing, limping, or other harmful indicators. Be sure to likewise consider their poop, as diarrhea can cause matted feathers and also clogged cloaca. Last but not least, it is important to watch out for social concerns, such as the smallest chick obtaining teased. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently fully feathery and its time for them to leave the safety of your residence and relocate outside into a cage. Take a look at our part on chicken cages to learn more about coops as well as correct cage environments.
