A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

WATypically hatcheries online offer both standard breeds and bantams. Bantams are fun hardy little chickens, they lay tiny eggs that kids especially love collecting. Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Hay Washington * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. If you want a mixture of both male and female then choosing a "straight run" will save you money and you will get a mixture of male and female chicks. You can also choose all males or all females too. * Weekly specials. Hatcheries have sales on chicks, you are likely to get a good deal if you are flexible with the breeds you are wanting. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Hay Washington is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Hay, Washington Baby chicks are very cute and also hard to stand up to, yet it's best to plan for their arrival prior to you obtain them. Prepare first by compiling not just the proper materials, however additionally the appropriate knowledge to care for them. Raising baby chicks is fairly straightforward, you just should offer them with the following: A clean as well as cozy environment Plenty of food and also water Attention and also love Habitat Your habitat can be a basic box, fish tank, pet cat provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without any loose strings!) to start, and also after a few weeks use straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid using only paper or various other slipper surfaces-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You likewise need something to serve up food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and water meal from the feed store, or a pickle jar lid for food as well as a family pet bird water dispenser from an animal store. Additionally, as the chicks get older you could present a perch into the habitat to obtain them trained on setting down. Warmth To maintain your chicks warm you need to provide them with a heat source. This could be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also work extremely well (my referral). Chicks need this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which can use up to two months). The newly hatched out require a temperature between 90 and also 100 levels, as well as each week this can be decreased by around 5 levels approximately. The warmth source must be on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your best thermostat- if they are concealing in the other corner of your warmth light, you need to lower the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not just curling up), you should include some heat. House cleaning Cleanliness is vital as well as it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bedding often and consistently give clean food and water Food as well as water. Chicks expand very quickly which needs plenty of tidy food as well as water. Supply sufficient whatsoever times and also inspect commonly to avoid dehydrated and also hungry chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, and also it comes in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the very first 2 months, after that switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for one more 2 months, and then to a somewhat lower healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to get a running start on taking dirt baths, while others will not use up that task till they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Interest and also love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. To start with, they will certainly probably bond with you and also not escape as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also view their habits, you could capture ailment or various other problems previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or other harmful indicators. Make sure to likewise check out their poop, as looseness of the bowels can lead to matted plumes and clogged up cloaca. Lastly, it is very important to watch out for social issues, such as the littlest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are now completely feathered as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your residence as well as move outside right into a coop. Have a look at our part on chicken coops for more information concerning coops as well as appropriate coop habitats.
