Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Castle Rock, Washington Baby chicks are very adorable as well as challenging to withstand, but it's best to prepare for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by gathering not only the correct materials, however additionally the appropriate understanding to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you merely need to supply them with the following: A tidy and also warm habitat Plenty of food as well as water Interest and love Habitat Your habitat could be a simple box, fish tank, feline provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (with no loosened strings!) to start, and after a couple of weeks use straw over paper. Note: Avoid using only paper or various other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow malformed. You also need something to dish out food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water meal from the feed shop, or a pickle container cover for food and a family pet bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks get older you could present a perch into the environment to obtain them educated on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks warm you need to offer them with a warmth resource. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also work effectively (my recommendation). Chicks need this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could occupy to two months). The newly hatched need a temperature in between 90 and 100 degrees, and also each week this could be minimized by around 5 degrees approximately. The warmth resource must be on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks a range of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are concealing in the contrary corner of your warmth light, you should decrease the temperature level. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not just cuddling), you need to put some heat. Home cleaning Sanitation is crucial as well as it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to change the bedding frequently as well as constantly provide clean food and water Food and also water. Chicks expand really quickly which needs plenty of tidy food as well as water. Give enough at all times as well as inspect frequently to avoid thirsty and also starving chicks. Chick food is different than grown-up chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated varieties. Feed chick food for the first two months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks want to obtain a head start on taking filth bathrooms, while others won't take up that task until they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or filth for them to shower in. Interest and also love There are a few advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. To start with, they will probably bond with you as well as not flee as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and also watch their actions, you could catch ailment or various other problems previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or other unhealthy indicators. Be sure to likewise check out their poop, as looseness of the bowels can lead to matted feathers and also clogged cloaca. Last but not least, it is essential to keep an eye out for social problems, such as the tiniest chick obtaining teased. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently completely feathered and its time for them to leave the security of your residence and relocate outside into a coop. Have a look at our area on chicken coops to find out more about cages as well as correct cage environments.
