*(ADDED NOVEMBER 9 – to those who wrote me excited about the event and concerned about bio-security, I wanted to add we encouraged foot baths during this tour and will require it next year. To my knowledge no chickens became ill or were negatively effected in any way from this event. We want to help ensure this and make everyone including our feathered friends as comfortable as possible during next year’s tour.)

Commonly the cost looks appealing, your house looks desirable, heck even the clean-cut family members standing there feeding the chickens look desirable. Definitely they recognize a professional chicken house when they see one? There are lots of inexpensive and horrible cages swamping the market. Generally these standardized models are constructed of fast grown up lumber - come the initial drop of rain they swell, leaving you either blockading a door that will not shut, or tearing the doorway furniture off in a vain attempt to release the squawking residents. The first warm and comfortable day indicates the wood dries out as well as cracks, the really felt roof covering bubbles as well as boils, and come nightfall the hens refuse to go in. This is not because of their disappointment at the decrease of their as soon as attractive commercial property yet considering that the hovel is currently a place for, as well as possibly crawling with, the chicken keeper's nemesis, red mite. Add on the fact that it stated on the blurb that it would certainly match four big chickens when that equipping thickness was based upon the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, as well as what are you left with? A number of hinges and some kindling. A suitable coop for thee to four birds should cost you around ₤ 300 though this can depend upon whether you elect for a totally free standing house or one with a run connected. Presuming you are ranging your birds in a huge room and the pop opening doorway is big sufficient for the breed you keep, after that the major requirements of real estate boil down to three points which will certainly define the number of birds your home will hold; perches, nest boxes and also air flow. A lot of types of chicken will certainly perch when they go to roost at night, this perch should ideally be 5-8cm broad with smoothed off sides so the foot rests conveniently on it. The perch ought to be more than the nest box access as chickens will also normally look for the highest point to perch. A perch less than that will certainly have the birds roosting in the nest box over night (which is incidentally when they produce the most poo) causing soiled eggs the list below day. They should not however be so high off the flooring of your home that leg injuries could possibly occur when the bird comes down in the early morning. Chickens require regarding 20cm of perch each (in tiny breeds this is obviously less), plus if greater than one perch is installed in your home they should be greater than 30cm apart. They will certainly hunker up with their neighbors but are not that keen on roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Ideally the house must have a the very least one nest box for every three birds and also these should be off the ground and also in the darkest location of your house. Your house must have ample ventilation: without it after that condensation will certainly accumulate every evening, even in the coldest of climate. Understand, ventilation works on the principle of warm air leaving with a high space drawing cooler air in from a reduced space - it's not a collection of openings on other wall surfaces of your house and at the same level, this is what's called a draft. If you have a house with a run attached after that the factors above are still real, but you must also consider the run size. The EU maximum lawful equipping thickness for a complimentary range bird is (and also allow's face it, one of the inspirations for keeping some chickens in the house is possibly boosted or much better welfare) 2,500 birds per hectare, that's optimal one bird per 4m squared. Take a close look at several of the bargain houses - it could well be your house has the ideal perches, right ventilation and also ample nest boxes for a reasonable number of birds, but will each of the chickens have anything greater than an A4 sized item of ground to spend the day on? And so as the saying goes, "you get just what you spend for". You might believe you've got hold of a bargain, however you and also your flock can rue the day you did. Acquisition the appropriate house and also it will last for a couple of decades, if not longer offered the appropriate treatment. Eventually your chicken and your fowl keeping encounter will be much the far better for it.
