The chickens are eating out of my hand!!!!

Baby steps here.  These chickens need to learn that I am a friendly caring benefactor, and not a scary creepygrabber.  And pretty much the only way into the heart of a chicken is through their stomach.  I’ve started going out to check on them every morning and evening, and giving them treats of some sort, usually a handful of cracked corn.  Over the course of the last several days, they have realized that when I come out to see them, they will be getting treats, and they respond accordingly.  They now walk up to the door of the enclosure and talk at me in quiet little honks.  I have slowly been broadcasting the corn for them closer and closer to myself, and finally yesterday they started eating out of my hand.  I’m aware that I am reaching facebook parent level obsession, but I’m not forcing you to watch the video.  But you know, you can if you want to!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Pulaski, Virginia Baby chicks are very charming as well as tough to stand up to, yet it's best to prepare for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by compiling not just the appropriate products, yet also the proper understanding to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is fairly simple, you simply have to provide them with the following: A tidy and also warm and comfortable habitat Lots of food and also water Attention and also love Environment Your environment can be a basic box, fish tank, feline provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as blankets (without loose strings!) to begin, and also after a couple of weeks utilize straw over paper. Note: Avoid utilizing just paper or various other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could expand misshapen. You likewise require something to provide food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder and water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food as well as a family pet bird water dispenser from a pet shop. Additionally, as the chicks get older you could present a perch into the habitat to obtain them educated on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks heat you have to provide them with a warmth source. This could be as straightforward as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile warmth light bulb likewise work very well (my referral). Chicks require this heat 24/7 up until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could use up to 2 months). The recently hatched need a temperature level between 90 as well as 100 levels, and also each week this can be lowered by around 5 levels approximately. The warmth resource need to get on merely one side of the cage to permit chicks a variety of temperatures. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are hiding in the other corner of your warmth lamp, you need to reduce the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not simply curling up), you should add some heat. Housekeeping Sanitation is essential as well as it maintains your chicks healthy and balanced. Make sure to transform the bedding typically and also consistently supply tidy food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks grow quite quick which requires lots of clean food and also water. Give sufficient in any way times and also inspect usually to avoid parched and starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to grown-up chicken food, as well as it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial 2 months, then switch over to a raiser food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and after that to a somewhat reduced protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking dirt bathrooms, while others won't take up that task until they are older. If you have the area in your chick room, introduce a tray of sand or dirt for them to wash in. Attention and love There are a couple of advantages to spending quality time with your chicks. First off, they will certainly probably bond with you as well as not flee as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as watch their behavior, you could capture disease or various other issues earlier.
