Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Paint Bank Virginia * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Paint Bank, Virginia Baby chicks are very charming and also difficult to resist, yet it's ideal to prepare for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by compiling not only the correct materials, yet additionally the appropriate expertise to care for them. Raising baby chicks is relatively basic, you merely have to supply them with the following: A clean and also warm habitat Lots of food and water Attention as well as love Environment Your environment can be a simple box, fish tank, pet cat service provider, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (without any loosened strings!) to begin, and also after a few weeks make use of straw over newspaper. Note: Avoid utilizing only paper or various other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You additionally need something to provide food and water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water dish from the feed store, or a pickle jar cover for food and an animal bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks grow older you can introduce a perch into the environment to get them trained on setting down. Heat To maintain your chicks warm you have to supply them with a warmth resource. This can be as basic as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design light from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile warmth bulb also work effectively (my recommendation). Chicks require this heat 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could take up to two months). The newly hatched require a temperature level between 90 and 100 levels, as well as every week this could be reduced by around 5 levels approximately. The heat resource must get on just one side of the cage to allow chicks an array of temperature levels. The chicks are your best thermometer- if they are hiding in the other corner of your heat light, you have to reduce the temperature. If they are surrounding each other under the warmth (not merely snuggling), you have to add some heat. Housekeeping Cleanliness is key as well as it keeps your chicks healthy. Make sure to transform the bedding usually and constantly offer clean food and also water Food and also water. Chicks expand quite quickly which needs lots of clean food and also water. Offer sufficient at all times as well as inspect commonly to prevent thirsty and also starving chicks. Chick food is various than grown-up chicken food, and it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial two months, after that switch over to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and afterwards to a slightly lower protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks prefer to get a running start on taking filth baths, while others won't take up that activity up until they are older. If you have the area in your chick room, present a tray of sand or dust for them to bathe in. Interest and also love There are a couple of advantages to hanging out with your chicks. To start with, they will most likely bond with you and also not run away as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as view their behavior, you could catch disease or various other troubles previously. Watch out for hissing, limping, or other undesirable indicators. Make sure to additionally look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could cause matted feathers and also stopped up cloaca. Last but not least, it is very important to keep an eye out for social issues, such as the littlest chick obtaining badgered. Empty nest disorder So your chicks are currently completely feathered as well as its time for them to leave the safety of your house as well as relocate outside right into a coop. Take a look at our section on chicken cages to get more information about cages and also correct coop environments.
