A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Jewell Ridge, Virginia Baby chicks are very cute and hard to resist, yet it's best to plan for their arrival before you get them. Prepare first by gathering not just the proper products, yet additionally the correct knowledge to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably simple, you merely should provide them with the following: A clean and cozy habitat Lots of food and also water Focus as well as love Environment Your habitat could be a simple box, aquarium, cat carrier, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels and also blankets (with no loosened strings!) to begin, as well as after a couple of weeks utilize straw over newspaper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of only newspaper or other sandal surface areas-- or your chicks legs could grow misshapen. You additionally require something to dish out food and also water in, such as a chicken feeder as well as water recipe from the feed shop, or a pickle container cover for food and an animal bird water dispenser from a pet dog shop. Likewise, as the chicks grow older you can introduce a perch right into the habitat to obtain them trained on perching. Warmth To keep your chicks heat you have to provide them with a heat source. This can be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment shop, or an infrared reptile heat bulb also function very well (my referral). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which can occupy to two months). The newly hatched out need a temperature level in between 90 and also 100 degrees, as well as weekly this could be reduced by approximately 5 degrees or so. The warmth source ought to be on merely one side of the cage to enable chicks a range of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are hiding in the other corner of your warmth light, you should lower the temperature. If they are smothering each other under the warmth (not just cuddling), you should include some heat. Home cleaning Sanitation is essential and it maintains your chicks healthy. Be sure to transform the bed linens frequently and also always supply clean food as well as water Food and water. Chicks grow very fast which calls for a lot of tidy food and water. Give enough at all times as well as examine typically to prevent thirsty and also hungry chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, as well as it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the first two months, after that change to a raiser food (~ 17 % healthy protein) for one more 2 months, and after that to a somewhat reduced protein feed or a level feed (if you have levels). Soil Some chicks like to get a running start on taking filth baths, while others will not occupy that task until they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or filth for them to shower in. Attention and also love There are a couple of benefits to spending time with your chicks. Firstly, they will probably bond with you and also not flee as grownups. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily and also watch their actions, you can catch disease or various other problems previously. Keep an eye out for wheezing, hopping, or other harmful indicators. Make certain to additionally consider their poop, as looseness of the bowels can bring about matted plumes and blocked cloaca. Lastly, it is necessary to keep an eye out for social issues, such as the smallest chick obtaining teased. Empty nest syndrome So your chicks are currently completely feathered and its time for them to leave the safety of your house and move outside right into a cage.
