Picking up Chicks at the County Fair

Yep, I’m that kind of guy. I guess I just like the kind of chicks that hang out at the fair. What can I say?

HaHa… actually I hope you know I’m just playing with words there! We got a small batch of chicks (that’s baby chickens… just in case you didn’t know) from the County Fair. What happens at the fair is that they have an educational booth with eggs in a big see through incubator. These eggs hatch and the kids all go nuts. They love it. For the few days that the exhibit run they must hatch a few hundred chicks. These chicks are put in a large open display for the kids to look at.

If you find yourself at a County Fair with this type of exhibit, ask the volunteer if the chicks are for sale afterwards. At our Fair they have a list that you can put your name on. At closing time on the final day you stand in line ready to pay $0.50 per chick! Wow, that’s cheap 🙂

Enjoy here a short video showing the chicks after a few weeks.

and here is the young rooster after finding his voice!

How to Care for your new baby chickens in Fork Union, Virginia Baby chicks are really charming and also tough to stand up to, yet it's ideal to plan for their arrival before you obtain them. Prepare first by collecting not only the appropriate materials, however likewise the appropriate knowledge to look after them. Raising baby chicks is fairly easy, you simply should supply them with the following: A tidy and cozy environment A lot of food and also water Interest as well as love Habitat Your habitat can be a basic box, aquarium, feline service provider, or guinea pig cage. Line it with old towels as well as coverings (with no loosened strings!) to start, and also after a few weeks make use of straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid using only newspaper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs could expand malformed. You also require something to provide food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and water dish from the feed shop, or a pickle jar lid for food and also a pet dog bird water dispenser from an animal shop. Also, as the chicks grow older you could present a perch right into the habitat to get them educated on perching. Heat To keep your chicks heat you need to offer them with a heat source. This could be as simple as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp style light from an equipment store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb likewise function very well (my referral). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 till their downy fluff is replaced with plumes (which could take up to 2 months). The freshly hatched require a temperature level between 90 and also 100 degrees, as well as every week this could be decreased by about 5 degrees or so. The heat source should get on merely one side of the cage to allow chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermometer- if they are concealing in the contrary edge of your heat light, you have to minimize the temperature level. If they are surrounding each other under the heat (not just cuddling), you need to include some warmth. Home cleaning Cleanliness is key and it keeps your chicks healthy. Make sure to transform the bedding commonly and always provide clean food and water Food and water. Chicks expand really fast which requires plenty of clean food and water. Offer sufficient in any way times and check often to prevent dehydrated as well as starving chicks. Chick food is various compared to adult chicken food, and also it can be found in both medicated as well as non-medicated selections. Feed chick food for the initial two months, then change to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for another 2 months, then to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a level feed (if you have layers). Dirt Some chicks want to get a running start on taking dust bathrooms, while others will not occupy that task till they are older. If you have the area in your chick enclosure, introduce a tray of sand or dust for them to shower in. Attention and love There are a couple of advantages to hanging out with your chicks. Firstly, they will certainly most likely bond with you and also not escape as grownups. Second, if you examine your chicks daily and view their habits, you could catch ailment or other problems earlier. Watch out for hissing, hopping, or various other undesirable signs. Be sure to also look at their poop, as looseness of the bowels could cause matted feathers and obstructed cloaca. Last but not least, it is very important to watch out for social problems, such as the littlest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest syndrome So your chicks are now totally feathered and its time for them to leave the safety and security of your residence and move outside right into a coop.
