A Return to Chickens

It’s been a while. Probably a year in fact since we last had chickens.

We’ve had them off and on since we moved to the farm but, as I’ve told you before, paid us a few visits and then when I got pregnant with Baby G, Hubster sold them because, and I quote, he didn’t want to look after my dog, sheep, rabbits AND chickens while I was in confinement. A) what century are we in. Confinement. And B) why just the chickens?

Anyway I reluctantly allowed him to sell them. However the farm just doesn’t seem like a farm without hens so I had one of my small coops mended and yesterday, the children and I went to pick two ladies from a flock at another farm up the road.

Meet Beryl and Sylvia.

Beryl is a Black Rock and Sylvia (the more silvery one of the two) is a Speckeldy.

I only have one photo so far because the seemed a bit shy so I just left the with food and water to settle in.

I am so happy we have chickens again and I am going to encourage Boo to go and collect the eggs.

If you have ever wanted to keep chickens yourself, here is my

Bantams typically weigh less than 2 pounds when full grown. Just like ordering anything online there are pros and cons to ordering baby chicks online. Pros of buying baby chicks in Brightwood Virginia * Big Selection - If you are wanting a large variety of different chicken breeds and egg colors, you will find the best selection at an online hatchery. * Both Bantams and full sized chickens available * You get to choose what sex you want. Quantity - you must order a certain number of chicks. Typically hatcheries will require you buy a minimum of 25 chicks at a time. The number is necessary for the chicks survival during shipping. All 25 chicks are put in one small box without heat. They are crowded in the box and produce enough body heat to arrive in good shape. * The wait - If you choose to buy chicks from a feed store you will have them the same day but if you choose to go with a hatchery you have to wait until they are ready to ship and then wait for the chicks to arrive. Ordering baby chicks online in Brightwood Virginia is easy and has always been a very pleasant experience of me. It can be a little frustrating waiting for the chicks but it's so worth the wait. When the post office calls and you hear all those little "cheeps" or "chirps" in the background you'll know the wait was worth it! How to Care for your new baby chickens in Brightwood, Virginia Baby chicks are really adorable as well as hard to withstand, however it's ideal to plan for their arrival prior to you get them. Prepare initially by gathering not just the proper products, yet also the proper understanding to take care of them. Raising baby chicks is reasonably easy, you just should give them with the following: A tidy as well as warm and comfortable habitat Plenty of food and also water Attention as well as love Environment Your habitat can be a basic box, aquarium, feline carrier, or guinea porker cage. Line it with old towels and blankets (with no loose strings!) to begin, as well as after a few weeks utilize straw over paper. Keep in mind: Avoid making use of just newspaper or various other sandal surfaces-- or your chicks legs can expand malformed. You additionally need something to serve up food as well as water in, such as a chicken feeder and also water recipe from the feed store, or a pickle container lid for food and an animal bird water dispenser from a family pet store. Also, as the chicks grow older you can present a perch right into the habitat to get them trained on perching. Warmth To maintain your chicks warm you have to supply them with a warmth source. This can be as easy as a 100 watt light bulb in a reflective clamp design lamp from a hardware store, or an infrared reptile heat light bulb also work extremely well (my recommendation). Chicks require this warmth 24/7 until their downy fluff is replaced with feathers (which could take up to two months). The recently hatched require a temperature between 90 and also 100 degrees, as well as every week this could be reduced by around 5 degrees approximately. The warmth source ought to get on simply one side of the cage to enable chicks a variety of temperature levels. The chicks are your ideal thermostat- if they are hiding in the opposite corner of your warmth lamp, you have to decrease the temperature. If they are surrounding each various other under the heat (not just curling up), you have to include some warmth. Housekeeping Cleanliness is crucial and also it keeps your chicks healthy and balanced. Be sure to alter the bed linens commonly as well as consistently supply clean food and also water Food as well as water. Chicks expand extremely fast which calls for a lot of clean food as well as water. Offer sufficient in any way times and examine usually to stop parched and also hungry chicks. Chick food is different than adult chicken food, and also it is available in both medicated and also non-medicated ranges. Feed chick food for the first 2 months, then switch to a grower food (~ 17 % protein) for an additional 2 months, and afterwards to a somewhat reduced healthy protein feed or a layer feed (if you have layers). Soil Some chicks prefer to obtain a running start on taking filth bathrooms, while others will not take up that task until they are older. If you have the room in your chick enclosure, present a tray of sand or dirt for them to bathe in. Focus as well as love There are a few benefits to spending time with your chicks. First off, they will probably bond with you as well as not run away as adults. Second, if you analyze your chicks daily as well as enjoy their actions, you could capture illness or various other troubles previously. Keep an eye out for hissing, limping, or various other unhealthy indicators. Be sure to also take a look at their poop, as diarrhea could bring about matted feathers and blocked cloaca. Lastly, it is essential to keep an eye out for social concerns, such as the littlest chick obtaining teased. Vacant nest disorder So your chicks are now fully feathery and also its time for them to leave the safety and security of your house as well as relocate outside into a cage. Look into our area on chicken cages to read more about coops as well as correct cage habitats.
