What God Taught Me Through a Chicken Coop

A few weeks ago, my husband built our laying hens a chicken run. A large, fenced-in area reinforced by electrical wire and a screen ceiling to keep predators out, the run provided the chickens with plenty of dirt to scratch and bugs to eat.

Regardless, the hens remained inside, their combed heads tilted so one of their beady eyes could remain fixed on the square of light pouring into the dim little coop.

Sometimes, one of the hens would totter up the board, latticed with wooden strips for gripping, which led outside. She would poke her beak around the corner and peer around. But that was it. She remained where she was, because she couldn’t imagine a life beyond what she knew.

Especially a life better than the one she was living.

Days passed. My husband manually carried the hens outside. But instead of embracing their new world, the chickens panicked, flapping their fledgling wings and squawking, terrified of being turned into KFC, I suppose, though my husband had taken every precaution to ensure they were safe.

Watching those hens one evening, scratching the same patch of earth they’d been scratching every day since they arrived on our farm as chirping yellow puffs of down, I saw a metaphor for heaven.

Or, perhaps not a metaphor for heaven, as much as a metaphor to help me overcome fear of death.

My good friend Madison passed away nine years ago today. Her death at twenty-one—thirteen days after I was a bridesmaid in her wedding—was one of the most tragic events of my life.

I remember—in the days, weeks, and months following that phone call—trying to comprehend heaven and souls and the journey my friend had taken as she passed from life to death and life again.

Since childhood, I’d read verses and heard sermons about heaven. I believed in God and the promise of eternal life through the atoning blood of Jesus Christ, God’s son, and yet I couldn’t imagine a life beyond what I knew.

Especially a life better than the one I was living.

In the nine years that have passed, I have felt God’s presence, seen the light of His face during some of the darkest times of my life. This faithfulness has not only proven He is real, but also proven the reality of heaven.

I still do not entirely comprehend how our souls will one day pass from life to death and life again.

But I do know that this life I love—with its exquisite everyday occurrences: cuddling my daughters in bed in the morning, eating peanut butter ice-cream under the hot July sun, harvesting a bounty of vegetables while my family sleeps—is only a dim little coop compared to the splendor of heaven that exists beyond it.

And if dark times ever come again and I begin to doubt, I will remember those hens clustered in the familiar gloom while beyond them was a world waiting to be inhabited, if only they had faith that their overseer had their best interest at heart.

Have you ever felt God’s presence during a time of loss?

Usually these mass produced versions are constructed of rapid grown up hardwood - come the first drop of rain they swell, leaving you either defending a door that will not shut, or tearing the door furnishings off in a vain effort to release the squawking residents. The first warm and comfortable day suggests the lumber dries and also fractures, the really felt roofing bubbles and also boils, and also come nightfall the chickens refuse to enter. This is not due to their disappointment at the decrease of their once desirable commercial property however because the hovel is currently a sanctuary for, as well as most likely abounding, the chicken keeper's bane, red mite. Add that it claimed on the blurb that it would certainly suit four huge hens when that equipping thickness was based on the Circle Line at 5pm on a Friday, as well as exactly what are you left with? A couple of hinges and some kindling. A decent coop for thee to four birds must cost you around ₤ 300 though this could depend on whether you elect for a cost-free standing house or one with a run attached. Thinking you are varying your birds in a large room and the pop opening door allows enough for the breed you maintain, then the primary demands of housing come down to three points which will certainly define the number of birds your home will certainly hold; perches, nest boxes as well as ventilation. Most types of chicken will perch when they visit roost at night, this perch ought to ideally be 5-8cm wide with smoothed off sides so the foot sits conveniently on it. The perch must be above the nest box entrance as chickens will certainly also normally seek the highest point to perch. A perch less than that will have the birds roosting in the nest box overnight (which is incidentally when they create one of the most poo) bring about stained eggs the list below day. They shouldn't nonetheless be so high off the flooring of the house that leg injuries could occur when the bird gets down in the morning. Chickens require concerning 20cm of perch each (in tiny breeds this is obviously much less), plus if more than one perch is installed in the house they must be greater than 30cm apart. They will hunker up with their next-door neighbors but are not that crazy about roosting with a beak in the bloomers of the bird in front. Preferably your house ought to have a the very least one nest box for each three birds and also these must be off the ground as well as in the darkest location of the house. Your house ought to have sufficient air flow: without it after that condensation will build up every night, even in the chilliest of weather condition. Understand, ventilation works with the principle of warm and comfortable air leaving via a high gap attracting cooler air in from a reduced gap - it's not a collection of openings on opposite walls of the house and also at the very same level, this is exactly what's referred to as a draught. If you have a house with a run connected then the points above are still real, but you need to additionally think about the run size. The EU maximum legal stocking density for a free variety bird is (as well as let's encounter it, among the motivations for maintaining some chickens in the house is possibly boosted or much better welfare) 2,500 birds each hectare, that's maximum one bird each 4m settled. Take a close consider some of the bargain homes - it could well be your house has the best perches, proper ventilation and sufficient nest boxes for a practical variety of birds, however will each of the chickens have anything more than an A4 sized piece of ground to invest the day on? Therefore as the claiming goes, "you obtain what you pay for". You may believe you've grabbed a bargain, yet you as well as your group could possibly rue the day you did. Acquisition the right house and it will last for a couple of decades, if not longer given the correct treatment. In the end your chicken and your chicken keeping encounter will certainly be considerably the much better for it.
